I promised I’d shut up about gaming, didn’t I? Well, I fibbed. Or rather, I promised I’d shut up about Ultima 7. Well, I’ve been playing Ultima 4 all day, so you’re just going to have to put up with me. Today’s topic: The Top 20 Best Games of All Time. Why that, you ask? Because I’ve been reading this and I felt like it. So here we are. This will be slightly unconventional, as Sirian’s list is one of video games. Mine is one of all games, period. I’m funny like that. Also, this is no real order, as I lack the patience to categorize to that degree. So. 1. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Second Edition (TSR, 1989): I […]

“Is that REALLY virtuous, Avatar?”

On a different note, and with applogies to the Luddite computer game haters in the audience, this’ll be my last on this particular subject, but I feel as if my staying up all night to beat the last two thirds or so of Serpent Isle is somehow worthy of recognition. Insamuch as it ought to be recognized that nobody really makes games like this anymore. Even the BGs, even Morrowind, for all I love those games, have nothing on the plot of Serpent Isle. This, folks, is the pinnacle of computer gaming in almost every way that it matters. SI’s plot is engaging, though there are a few sort of confusing spots here and there. Graphically it is now behind […]

This one’s for Laura, though it’s fairly doubtful she’ll ever know. To explain for the rest of you, I got a call last night, to the effect of “Yeah, Laura’s leaving! The going away party is tonight! Come!” Okie, I’m there. I won’t bore you with the conversation. It wasn’t much, as conversation, though it’s probably some of the best conversation I’ve had with them in quite some time. The point, such as it is, is that life is slowly going by. Five years ago, and the anniversary was about a month ago, I was a very shy, rather frightened college freshman wondering how one went about meeting people in this strange new world. Nothing to it, really. Roomie introduced […]

Or it comes pretty damn close, anyway. Lotta gaming lately. Lotta studying, too, but lotta gaming. I feel like I’m taking that whole work hard/play hard thing to heart now. Other night, Thursday I want to say, Whir introduced me to Vampire: The Masquerade. That there, and pardon my French, is some fucked up shit. But it’s fun. Being as how I didn’t even know the rules or anything, I just made a character up something or another like me. We start in Corvallis. Walk out of my dorm room, get, uh, recruited by a vampire to be his, um, archivist. I get a nice gory death scene. This is good. There’s a nifty scene in which he’s like “Well, […]

Ok, Reg. Here’s yer update. :) I played my cards right, and it didn’t quite work anyway, but more on that later. First, there was MWDA. And we played MWDA, and we lost horribly bad, but that’s ok, because our army wasn’t designed to win in the first place. Then we traded for almost all the non-unique Liao pieces we didn’t have, and life was good. Then came Serpent Isle. I cannot rave enough about how good this game is. Even if it is from 1992. By far the best Ultima, I’d say. But I just ranted about that, so I won’t. Not finished with it yet, but I’m doing well. I’m also pleasantly surprised to know that despite what […]

Because I can’t bring myself to replace the irreplacable Marechal quote at the top there yet, but because this needs saying: Whir: “How come I have to be a Unicorn? Brandon got Vampire, why can’t I? :(“

Ok, so I lied in the last one about real life stuff. ‘sides. The rest of you probably had no idea what I was talking about in there. So we’re in Early Republic class, uh, Tuesday, and we’re having a discussion about the assigned reading – Affairs of Honor about the culture of honor in early American politics. Anyway. People are kinda bringing up some points, having a talk on it. Prof turns to me, and she’s like “Well, what did you think?” Dangerous, that was. “Well, honestly, while I thought the book had a lot of good points, and said a lot of good things, most of which have been covered already, I thought the book could have been […]

Little worth repeating in real life, though if I play my cards right, that might change. But everybody’s gone for the weekend, looks like. Oh well. I beat Ultima 7, though. In remarkably little time, after a very lengthy haitus from it. It’s rather surprising how much of it I remembered with perfect clarity, even with ten years’ distance between now and the last time I had played. I remembered the invisible caltrops in the hidden pirate cave near Jelholm. I remembered where about half the magic armor was. Did the entire expansion in about 4 hours because I remembered how to do the whole thing. I had also totally forgotten how easy it is to munch yourself out in […]

Well, let’s see. What’s been going on in the world… Besides homework the whole week, that is. Way. Too. Much. Homework. The. Entire. Freaking. Week. In fact, I should be doing homework right now. But, in the words of somebody or another, fuck THAT shit. Movies! We can watch movies! We can go see Tali and Laurent on Friday, who we haven’t seen for 3 months and a month, respectively, and watch…Bowling For Columbine. Well, that’s nice and uplifting. But that’s ok. I’m me. I thrive on depressing movies. In fact, I want to see Boyz N the Hood again. Yeah. So anyway. Good flick, though the song it plays at the menu REALLY needs to go. Oh, yeah. And […]

More Marechalisms. Him, then me, etc. The HRE in the 16th century is fascinating. I want to delve more into that. Luther’s Reformation. THE Charles V. Maximilian. Wallenstein. White Mountain. Mohacs. Gustavus Adolphus’ mixed legions. Rise of the glorious and honorable mode of warfare, although not quite so evident during the Rennaisance. That was like the in-between stage of warfare. Awkward introduction of gunpowder. Old meets the new. Etc. The Thirty Years War is SO not honorable in any way shape or form. But yeah. I do want to do some reading on the period. Need a good general history of France, and a good general history of Spain, and a good general history of Germany. Right, well, yeah, the […]

Diary of a Madrabbit

In lieu of ranting about life again, which involved me A, hating class a lot and B, running into a number of interesting women, I shall post this rather more interesting snippet of conversation from Alsherok. No, it makes no sense. No, it doesn’t need to. You say ‘Info: Belamon (11) killed by A Giant Rabbit at 5452’ You say ‘Once more, the freedom fighters strike a blow against the tyrranical opressors.’ You say ‘Join us! Rise against the tyrranical opressors! Fight the power! Fuck the police! Kill adventurers! Power to the rabbits!’ A Giant Rabbit chats ‘Rise up against the oppressors! Revolt! Revolt! Raise the banner of revolution!’ A Giant Rabbit points at Belamon accusingly. A Giant Rabbit chats […]

I did it all for the cookie, the cookie. To slightly misquote the Limp Bizkit song. Because monster cookies really do rule that much. So, here we are. It’s the second week of classes. My homework for Thursday was supposed to be two whole books, 500 or 600 pages. And that’s the stuff that’s absolutely required. The other “you won’t flunk but you’ll miss out on life” reading is another couple three hundred pages. There’s also a couple of misc. paper proposals and such as that floating around. If you don’t see me posting much, that’s why. Fortunately, the one book discussion has been pushed back until Tuesday. Rock on. Monday night sucked a lot. I mean, the day was […]

Before I wander off to
By Dwip October 4, 2003 at 4:09 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

Before I wander off to do some homework, we ponder a few things. Such as, for instance, This article, which tells us that Polish troops have found 2003-dated, French-built anti-aircraft missiles in Iraq despite the ban on selling weapons to Iraq. Or, for instance, the transcript of the head of the US WMD inspectors in Iraq’s testimony before Congress about the state of the investigation, which sums up to “Well, we haven’t found anything yet, and boy the newspapers sure are concentrating on that, but what we have come up with looks really frickin’ suspicious, yknow?” Though, to be fair to the other side, the whole “imminent threat of WMDs” thing might have been a TOUCH exaggerated, eh Bush? Much […]

I am REALLY tired. Which sucks. I hate being really tired. But the point, really, is that my prof for comparative politics is all talking economics, and she’s like “The protestant ethic directly caused the growth of capitalism in Western Europe.” There’s a famous book behind it, apparently. I think I’ve heard of it. But really, let’s go with a no on that one, unless anybody objects. I might explain that more when I’m awake, though.

We Are the Champions / Last Night on Earth
By Dwip October 2, 2003 at 12:16 pm Comments Off on We Are the Champions / Last Night on Earth RSS Feed for this post

Well, here we are. The fourth day of school, the third of class. But first, we flash back to…last night. MWDA funness, of course. As in, I won my first tourney, and even got a token fellowship vote despite my A, winning which excludes me from that, and B, my thinking that I was being somewhat of a dick the whole night. This is nice to know. The games themselves went like this: First one involved me stringing out the other army, chopping it to bits inch by inch, meanwhile avoiding the Behemoth tank waiting to obliterate me. This worked well. The second game, I got lucky on a charge and a capture, and though it was sort of iffy […]
