The Light Before We Land

So, here we are. The world supply of 2006 is rapidly running out, and soon we’ll be entering that brave new world of 2007. Part of me still thinks it’s going to be 1997 soon, but we’ll just supress that part, because honestly, who wants to listen to all that awful music again? No? Didn’t think so. Anyway. It’s been quite a year. Much accomplished, much changed. Gained a job, lost a job. Moved across the country. Got an apartment on my own. Went to school. Met some pretty cool people. Left some behind, too. If I have not quite triumphed over everything I set out to, I’ve come pretty close. All in all, it’s been a pretty good year. […]

To those of you who showed up last night for the Traditional Christmas Eve Entertainment Night(tm)(R), I hope you all had as much fun as I had, though next time we play Solarquest, there will be less bogus rules interpretations. To those of you saddened by the lack of movie watching, sorry and if you name one you’d like to see, we can make it happen. To those of you who I haven’t seen yet, sorry and we’ll definitely get together soon. To Sarah, who will probably boggle at all the movie indoc, […]

So I’m actually in OR now, and have been since 9:30 Tuesday night. For those among you who knew my schedule, this should look suspicious, and indeed, strange things were afoot at the Circle K, as the saying goes. Let us examine my original flight schedule: 5:57pm Leave New Haven for Philadelphia. 6:59pm Arrive at Philadelphia. 8:20pm Leave Philadelphia for Las Vegas. 10:59pm Arrive at Las Vegas. 11:51pm Leave Las Vegas for Eugene. 2:07am Arrive in Eugene. This looks great and all, right? Only it’s a foul lie. Here’s what really happened: 2:30pm Leave my house. 2:50pm Board the Dixwell bus to ride into New Haven to transfer to the airport bus. 3:05pm Arrive in New Haven. 3:40pm As no […]

Dear CT state DMV. Please either get effecient enough so that tasks that take half an hour don’t take 4, or die. Your attention to this matter is appreciated. To everyone else, since I haven’t bothered to actually tell half of you, I’ll be coming back to OR from the 19th to the 10th of January. I expect there to be general revelry. Some of you have gotten IMs or emails. If I haven’t included you, do let me know about it.

Since I keep talking about how I’ve been writing down the adventures of the intrepid heroes of the last Forgotten Realms D&D game I ran, Jason prodded me about posting them here. Since the only other thing I have to talk about is skipping class because I’m so tired from working on my ILS 501 database I can’t think to drive, I’ll just go ahead and do so. But let us not begin with our latest heroes, because that’s closer to the end of the story. Instead, let’s talk about our original heroes. The time, as best I recall, is 1997. The game was AD&D, Second Edition, with all the various game-breaking books. Our Heroes: Kink, Human Cleric of Valkur […]

So Mom’s birthday was the 17th, and she calls me up, and she’s like “Dad got me a 40″ widescreen TV!” “Ooo,” I say. “Will it fit in my luggage when I come home?” So then she calls me last night, and we’re talking, and she says “Oh, you’ll never guess what our new pre-bedtime ritual is now.” “Er, no…” I say, wondering if there’s some goat sacrificing or something I just wasn’t aware of for 25 years. “We’ve been playing Mario!” “Mario. Like, original NES, Mario 1? That Mario?” “Yeah! With the coins, and the plants that eat you!” “That’s too awesome.” I say. First Wikipedia, then the world! Also this, just ’cause. And a bit of gaming action, also just ’cause. NWN2 – I thought having to run through a wall of fire to get their guys was cool. It didn’t save them, but. And the extra-special “Yeah, BG2 is still cool.” shot. That’s from the Solaufien mod, and check out how many effect icons Sola has, anyway. That fight was more than just a little out of control, as you might be able to tell. Each of my mages (3) went in there with contigencies, spell triggers, and lesser spell triggers, plus other buff spells. I shot off something like 3 Abu-Dazim’s Horrid Wiltings, 6 Cloudkills, a couple of Teleport Fields, and […]

With a nod to this MT strip. As Sarah was telling me Friday, with a nod to this old MT strip, it’s funny how they were talking about NWN1, and here we are on NWN2. Not to mention the about 6 year progression between a BG2 which hadn’t come out when that strip was made, and NWN2, which is 6 years and 2 engines more advanced. I’m sure that had a point somewhere. Anyway, let’s talk about NWN2. Actually, first, let’s talk about NWN1, with a nod to my old Alsherok review of it. Basically, we’re really awesome. Also we know what we’re talking about. And if you should want to get started with us, our store’s over here. Us: Good deal. Ccancho: Like the infamous kancho, only performed with any random handy piece of wood. To quote Carlos, “Man, you just took 7 11/16 inches of hard wood! Disgusting!” I could probably write an entire book about the anal fixation around here, but I don’t think anybody needs to have that much mental scarring. Also, remember kids: Chisels are very sharp, as Shawn found out today. Nice gash across the palm right near four fingers, all the way to the bone. Missed all the tendons. “Damn dude, you got lucky!” says everyone. I’ll stick to trying to cut my fingertips off, thanks.

Whenever we get those big 77 door units with the double arched panels, God just starts preemptively killing kittens. We did two of them today, so you can imagine how that went. Soon, soon, I’ll be leaving…

Somebody should name a band that. I dunno why. But yeah. One of the things I love about my job is when I start talking about our quality control and our reject rate. Used to be, and Dad could barely believe himself when I said this, that we’d rebuild probably 2 doors in every 50 or so, which works out to something around 4-5%. Today, by contrast, we built between 110-120 doors, and rebuilt around 20. Which is more like 15-20%. You can only laugh, really.

A small sampling of work-related humor. I’d do the large sample, but I can’t really figure out the proper way to describe Joel and Carlos yet. Suffice it to say that Joel has nicknamed me Snake, and delights in yelling it from time to time at me, alternating with maniacal laughter. This is much more amusing than it sounds, even. As to work itself, well, that can be summed up by the fact that in two days we’ve had twenty-eight door rebuilds, mostly in-shop rejects caused by overwork by the understaffed assembly group, made worse by my being hauled off to sanding table for hours and days on end. This is, perhaps, worse than it sounds, and prompts a good […]

Wherein we, in that long tradition of game reviews, shall now turn our leporidic gaze upon that most anticipated of recent RPGs, Oblivion. The short of it is that mostly it’s like the coolest thing you’ve ever played, with a few things that work…not so well. I feel the need here to note that Bethesda has inherited the mantle that Origin used to wear, and has done it quite well. This is, in fact, the second time I’ve upgraded my computer just to play a Bethesda game, the last time being when I got tired of 5 minute cell loads in Morrowind […]

And lastly, there are some who wish to learn that they may be themselves edified; and that is prudence.” Those expecting a real entry, well, I’ll probably talk about Oblivion or something in a time. That time is not now.

Let us, shall we, talk about the whole 18 credits deal, since I think it lies at the root of our problems, here. So, flashing back to the fall of 1999, we have my final grades for my first term: ALS 111 OSU ODYSSEY 1 credit, Pass BA 131 BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE 2 credits, A HHP 231 *LIFETIME FITNESS FOR HEALTH 3 credits, B+ MB 230 *INTRODUCTORY MICROBIOLOGY 4 credits, B MTH 111 *COLLEGE ALGEBRA 4 credits, […]

Portrait of the Rabbit As A Young Worker
By Dwip February 3, 2006 at 8:00 pm Comments (15) RSS Feed for this post

Click me! Me after a week at work, shown full size for great justice and clarity. Though not enough clarity, because you can’t quite tell that my hair was actually more white than not, being covered in so much sawdust. Also note the faded-looking flannel, which isn’t so much faded as covered in sawdust. Nor can you see my glasses, which are, yes, covered in sawdust. But my hair standing up is accurate. The sanding table has more static electricity than you can possibly imagine. I sure do look like a fool, closing my eyes like that. And yes, the part I hate the most about my job is how I breathe dust all day. There’s lots of other parts […]

Blast From the Past

Anybody who reads here and actually cares already knows that DS has, in Godlike fashion, caused the old Tonto forums from days of yore to rise from the dead. Thus providing us with endless Marechal quotes, of course. One of which I will relate to you momentarily, as I am too preoccupied with fixing my laptop and trying to make my desktop not shoot blue flames from the fan port upon the release of Oblivion, which I guess has specs so high only about five people are going to be able to run it. I garuntee to you that Whir, Samson, and I will be among them. Save your spot now. If presented with a choice wherein the HD on […]

Wherein Regina wins the Internet. click me! Also this, which may explain some things to some people. Maybe not. The X-ray rabbit picture at the top there would like to extend an appropriately X-ray rabbitish gesture to our younger readers. What exactly said gesture is, we’re not sure. We’re working on it.

Today In History

Wherein the non-MUD types, which I realize is most of you, flee in terror. However, I realized something the other day. I’ve been doing this, more or less, for about ten years this week. A long time ago, on a MUD far, far away, a certain dwarven warrior, who we shall call Dwip, began randomly jumping through portals in GD. Of the ones I remember, I definitely got killed by sahuagin in sea elves (an area where you take groups of level 50s) at least twice, drowned to death (probably in sea elves) at least once, and for the longest time thought the Gypsy encampment was next to Gwynned Dyr (it’s on the other side of the world). Those were […]

Sympathy For the Working Rabbit

Wherein I come home last night, and have the following conversation with Mom: Mom: So, how’re you feeling? Me: Really sore. My hand cramped up for a couple hours, and it really sucked. Mom: At this point, some people would say “Welcome to the real world.” Me: *rather painfully looks up* Say that again and die. Besides, when’s the last time you were standing 10 hour shifts, anyway? Mom: Yeah, well, I put in my years. Me: Uh, no, really. Mom: Well, I didn’t _stand_ 10 hour shifts, exactly… Me: Trust me when I say being able to sit down makes all the difference here. Because, well, it really does. Leg pain for the lose. So if you meet me, […]

And On the Fifth Day, We Rested

Conversations around the household today: *Morning, as Mom leaves for a day in Eugene* Mom: So, what are you doing today? Me: As little as humanly possible. Mom: I see. *Evening, as Mom returns* Mom: So, what did you do today? Me: I played video games ALL DAY. Later, I will play video games ALL NIGHT. Mom: So you didn’t do anything productive today? Me: Well, I totally saved Tatooine. I’m about to save some Wookies, too. Mom: I see. *Dad enters* Dad: So, did anybody call? Mom: Nope, no messages. Dad: Good. Mom: Tell me about it. *a short pause* Mom: That made us sound really anti-social, didn’t it?

Skills To Pay The Bills
By Dwip January 3, 2006 at 7:01 pm Comments (8) RSS Feed for this post

I got I got the skills, as it were. Whir can now be placated with a Beastie Boys ref after the Counting Crows song quote. Or I could bust out Mom’s N’Sync CD and watch his ears bleed. However, since that would make MY ears bleed…no. Anyway. Let us begin with a picture. This is not, I assure you, the sort of New Year’s resolution I intended. But that new job I mentioned requires it for the respirator mask, so there you go. It feels decidedly odd, yet strangely familiar. I wish I could show you a picture of said respirator mask, because, as the guy sitting next to me in orientation said, “Hey, now we get to look like […]
