On That Games As Art Note
By Dwip December 17, 2010 at 3:48 pm Comments (8) RSS Feed for this post

So, if you’ve been around gaming circles in the last age, you may remember that whole Rogert Ebert “video games aren’t art” debate, in which Ebert says games don’t count as an art form, and gamers unite to call him an idiot. And while I generally respect Ebert, I think you can guess which side of that debate I come down on – I don’t think you get to look at almost any given narrative-driven game and believe it’s not art on some level, especially if we accept literature and movies as art forms. All that said, I’m not particularly interested in that line of commentary, and if you want, Shamus Young did it better than me. After the jump, […]

I’m going to spend some time rambling about Planescape: Torment, but first, you should check out this picture, but it’s quite amusing really. So, ok. For those of you who missed gaming 11 years ago, Planescape: Torment is the second game Black Isle did with the Infinity Engine after Baldur’s Gate, which you are required to have heard of in order to participate on this blog. It’s set in the AD&D Planescape setting, which may be summed up by “lots of weird shit happens. Also portals.” You wake up on a slab in the mortuary as the Nameless One. You don’t remember who you are, except that you apparently cannot die, and lots of people seem to know you, if […]

Now, most of these expeditions aren’t particularly newsworthy, consisting as they did of sitting around and eating food and watching Highlander, but some of them are. And I have pictures. Oh, yes I have pictures. Beware the loading times after the jump. But first, a brief note. You know, getting to DC from New Haven is actually pretty easy and humane if you know what you’re doing. Some year, I will put up a non Oblivion-related post. This is not that year, however. This one’s simple. I got really tired of playing dress up with my newly created NPCs, and finding proper hair colors was annoying, since you had to find that one guy with the right color and copy his values. So, I made a series of reference images to help me, and maybe help you. Hairstyles Note that these are CS screenshots, and actual hair looks moderately better with shaders applied in-game. This is pretty old news for most of you, since I discussed this back in the day on Samson’s blog, but I want to put this here so that I have somewhere handy to reference it. The basic problem is this – the yellow arrow for player location on the world map (and probably the local map) is only ever accurate when the player is facing precisely Northwest. If the player isn’t facing northwest, the arrow becomes some level of inaccurate, like so: The red cross is facing NW and is accurate. Going clockwise, the blue dots are N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W. This holds true for both menus and menus80.

Darths & Droids clearly explains a mainstay of my HS and college gaming experience: In an in-character argument, the characters naturally need to apply the logic of the game world. The logic of the real world, however, may be very different. Being both a player and the incarnation of a character means you have to weigh your statements doubly carefully to avoid ridiculous assertions. This also has application to player versus GM arguments. If the GM strikes down something you want to do on logical grounds, you should argue that it makes sense in the game world. After all, your character just tried it, didn’t he? A character who is familiar with how reality works in the game world surely […]

It perhaps goes without saying that having thousands of people enjoy your work is a pretty good rush, never mind the ego boost and the affirmation that maybe you don’t suck after all. 2. With that said, as some […]

Heraldic Shields With GIMP

Not precisely how I had planned to break my latest long silence, but I sort of needed this for something, and it would be wise of me to remember how I did it. So. Basically, I want to create these: Which could be better, but aren’t bad for having started life as low-res book scans. For those of you not in my D&D game, those are house arms for noble families in Waterdeep. I’m not sure what I’ll do with them, but they’re shiny. 1. Open image 2. Layer/Transparency/Add Alpha Channel 3. Select exterior white area, delete 4. Move each color to new layer via selection 5. For each of the layers: – Hide all other layers. – Use the […]

Stargate Commentaries

So, having finished up all of Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, I figure I ought to say something about the experience. This is going to ramble a little. Or a lot. Because I am me, and this is 15 seasons of television plus three movies I’m talking about. You have been warned.

“Noblest of the Gods, King and Master of the whole Earth, Son of the great Hormisdas, CHOSROES, to Heraclius his vile and insensate slave: Refusing to submit to our rule, you call yourself lord and sovereign. You seize and distribute our treasure, you decieve our servants. You never cease to annoy us with your bands of brigands. Have I not destroyed you Greeks? You say that you trust in God; why then has he not delivered out of my hand Caesarea, Jerusalem, Alexandria? Could I not also destroy Constantinople?” —Chosroes II, King of Kings of Persia to Heraclius, Emperor of Byzantium, as quoted by John Julius Norwich

[15:19] serenadingwords: I’m leaving now before this gets any worse. [15:19] TontoMarius: Bah. [15:19] TontoMarius: You’re no fun. [15:19] TontoMarius: And useless to my endeavors to stay concious. [15:19] serenadingwords: I have 8 bazillion hours of work to do. [15:19] TontoMarius: Even warm falling water failed me. [15:20] serenadingwords: So take a nap. [15:20] TontoMarius: Lukewarm showers: The most disappointing things known to man? Signs point to yes. [15:20] TontoMarius: Maybe even worse than cold. [15:20] serenadingwords: No. Freezing cold is worse. [15:21] TontoMarius: Because at least with cold you can go “Well, this will suck, but we’ll man up and deal with the issue and move on.” [15:21] TontoMarius: Lukewarm just sticks you in this sort of perrenial “damn […]

A Public Service Announcement Regarding Spell Casting
By Dwip January 13, 2010 at 5:37 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

When making trigger zones that cast spells at people in them, one should always remember to check that the triggering thing is in fact an actual people, as opposed to, say, any random static, such as docks, lanterns, buildings, rubble, and the like. We see above the results of not performing this check. While constant streams of lightning are indeed epic, they are, perhaps, not the desired result.

Fine-Tuning NIF Texture Editing With Blender
By Dwip January 9, 2010 at 12:23 am Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

This article falls very firmly in the realm of “I hate my life so you don’t have to.” Because you know how I keep saying Blender is the Devil? I say it because it’s true. For the purposes of this article, let’s assume you have copies of Blender, Nifskope, and the Blender nif scripts, and have an already-completed .nif file you want to add additional texturing blocks to. Here’s how. 1. First, make a backup copy of the mesh you’re about to edit. 2. [PICTURE] Open up your mesh in Nifskope. For each NiTriStrips block, note down the value, which should be something like “CastleWallTower01:1”. You care about that :1 part. These blocks will be sequential. Having noted all of […]

Because, Essentially, I Hate My Life
By Dwip January 4, 2010 at 3:30 am Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

Hence why I am linking to this site full of Blender video tutorials for my later perusal. [edit] and also this [/edit] Well, that and because if I can actually figure out UV mapping, I will become as a god amongst rabbitkind. Moreso than I am already, that is. You get the idea. But only if I can overcome the Blender interface, which is quite literally the Devil. And I quote: [03:17] Dwip: Blender, seriously. How asinine is the fact that I have to not only type in the path for my file manually because you can’t deal with multiple drives, but instead of double click to open, I have to click a goddamn open button? [03:18] Dwip: Seriously, what […]

[03:01] Samson: Dear neighbors, kindly put the guns down, thanks. [03:02] Dwip: … [03:02] Dwip: Man, even in MY neighborhood nobody’s shooting off guns. [03:02] Samson: Those rumors you hear about people firing guns to ring in the new year? Where do you think they come from? [03:02] Dwip: Arkansas? [03:03] Samson: Uh, perhaps, but no. Let’s just say I’m probably close enough to ground zero to be it. [03:03] Dwip: Heh. [03:03] Dwip: This is true enough I suppose. [03:04] Samson: that one scene in Independence Day where the news asks people not to shoot at the alien ships? Yeah. That’s us. We’d totally do that.
