The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

In which I finally, after three years or so, finish all 1,147 pages of Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which is about precisely what it says on the cover. Tried reading it once in grade school, put it down, picked it back up in the later stages of my stay in CT, and here I am writing a blog post to mark the occasion. I don’t think it’s taken me this long to finish a book ever. Not, I note, because it’s a bad book – while long, it’s well-written enough, though Shirer is heavily biased (and fond of ad hominem), and informative – but because it’s a depressing subject. One wants to point out the […]

All the Pyros Kind of Get Old After A While
By Dwip December 21, 2012 at 5:51 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

“Well, solo silver seems to be going pretty well. I wonder if I can solo my way through gold.” Yes, I can, even though I was a bit underleveled for it and the damage bonuses I skipped would have helped. My M-99 Saber kroguard and I are pretty damn good together after all this time, and while I had to pop a bunch of consumables, it turns out that the biggest problem with soloing on gold isn’t the sheer number of dudes, or the multiple bosses, it’s the fact that you have to kill 5,687 mooks on every wave, for like an hour. Eventually it gets kind of trying, but perseverence pays off. Geth bombers are easily the most annoying […]

In which I’m kind of laying down a couple of markers to myself before I set about playing through Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition here in a hopefully short time. In other words, I’m trying to figure out what I want to play, and in going back through my old parties, I realized I haven’t very well consolidated all my various playthroughs together. So we’re going to do that. With pictures that I painstakingly hacked together in GIMP. No less than 9 of them. It may be that I like this game a bit (too much). I didn’t call it the Ravings of Demented Rabbits because I was sane, folks.

Dragon Age 2

Continuing in my trend towards belated reviews of Dragon Age games, let’s talk about Dragon Age 2 a bit. There is, I think it safe to say, no small amount of controversy about this game: Bioware selling out to the EA treadmill? The dumbing down of Dragon Age? I’ve heard it called both these and more besides. And I think both of these are kind of true, as I’ll elaborate on in time. Before answering any of this, I think I should note that I bought my copy for $8 on Amazon. If I had paid $60, I would likely be saying very different things. Now then.

There’s only so much Mass Effect 3 multiplayer or dental horror stories you can really bear on one blog, and I’m pretty sure I’ve hit my legal limit on both topics, which means this place is currently less the ravings of demented rabbits and more the existential wasteland of bored rabbits. Which may be slightly overstating the case, but nevertheless, the lack of content may continue until morale improves. Or something. A Brief Note On the Subject of Driver’s Licenses

So my old CT driver’s license was set to expire in about a month, meaning I got the joy of going down to the DMV to get it renewed today. And by “joy” and “DMV” I mean there were more (polite, friendly) people working at the DMV than there were people needing help, as opposed to how it was in CT, where “joy” and “DMV” basically meant “Kind of looked like a prison riot.” So that was nice.

Less rocks and dragon statues because I didn’t snag many collector’s editions. Sadly missing most of my old floppy games. But still, I put together a list.

Not to get off on too meta of a tangent, but I tend to see history as an interplay between broad, socioeconomic factors and the specific actions of key individuals. Sometimes socioeconomic factors take the lead, like, say, the way the potato famine drove Irish migration to America in the 1840s; sometimes the two walk in lockstep, like, say the way the conditions of post-World War I Germany made the rise of fascism possible but the specific and malevoloent idiosyncracies of Hitler defined the form that it took; and sometimes it is the key individual who takes the lead and drives the ox cart of history for a while. —Mike Duncan, The History of the Rome Episode 155

He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat. The See Also section is pretty great too.

Mass Effect 2: (Not) Getting DLC
By Dwip January 12, 2012 at 5:16 am Comments (7) RSS Feed for this post

I’m sick and I like to rant about things in games, so here’s one. So, back in 2010 when I picked up Mass Effect 1 + 2, I ended up getting the Digital Deluxe Edition of ME2 because it was essentially free at the time. This promised me all sorts of cool DLC, basically acting like the collector’s edition. Great. Now, here we are in 2012. I like starting sequels when I’m still on the high from the first game, so I figured I’d play some ME2 for a while.
