So a couple of days ago, Samson wrote a post about excavating old gaming artifacts. And, as I am a gamer of a certain age and also myself, I thought to myself “What does my version of that look like?”

Well. Lots of boxes. Less rocks and dragon statues because I didn’t snag many collector’s editions. Sadly missing most of my old floppy games. But still, I put together a list.

Said list is ordered by release date and not necessarily when I picked it up (especially relevent for older games). Things I know that I once owned but no longer have a physical copy of are in italics, and things I got via Steam/Origin/Impulse are noted. Since I didn’t have Steam until 2007, older Steam games were picked up after that time. Lastly, I’ve tried to note special/collector’s editions, multi-game packages, and other such things.

It’s also missing a bunch of things, including a ton of educational games. Don’t remember how many Carmen Sandiego games we had, or the number of King’s Quest/Space Quest/Police Quest games, or the Leisure Suit Larry games, or the Might and Magic games, or the other Wizardry games, or really much of anything we had for PC before about 1990. There was a lot of it, and Dad and I played it every night, but damned if I can remember at this point.

Now then.

1977

Combat (Atari – Atari 2600) [This may be the first thing I remember playing]

1980

Space Invaders (Taito – Atari 2600)

1981

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (Sir-tech – DOS) [Dad and I probably played most or all of the early Might and Magic and Wizardry games, or rather he played and I drew maps with colored pens on graph paper. Observant readers may notice formative experiences here]

1982

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Atari – Atari 2600) [Notably awful even when you’re 2]
Pac-Man (Atari – Atari 2600)
Super Breakout (Atari – Atari 2600)

1983

Kool-Aid Man (Mattel – Atari 2600)

1986

Bubble Bobble (Taito – NES)
Dragon Warrior (Nintendo – NES)
King’s Knight (Square – NES) [I recall beating about half of this with the aid of some powdered apple cider mix one very cold Valentine’s Day]
The Legend of Zelda (Nintendo – NES) [I actually liked the second game more, and went over to people’s houses to play it when I could]
Starflight (EA – DOS)

1987

Adventures of Dino Riki (Hudson Soft – NES) [A friend and I totally beat this whole thing one night during a sleepover in 5th grade or so]
Empire (Interstel – DOS) [Dad played a ridiculous amount of this. Formative strategy gaming experience]
Metal Gear (Konami – NES) [I’ve seriously never made it past the third room or so. Hardest game ever]
Super Team Games (Bandai – NES) [Remember when the Power Pad was cool?]

1988

Airwolf (Acclaim – NES)
Battlehawks 1942 (Lucasfilm Games – DOS)
Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode (Vic Tokai – NES)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo – NES)

Sim City (Maxis – DOS) [Vivid memories of printing out my cities on ten-foot reels of paper from our dot matrix printer]
Starflight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula (EA – DOS)
Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet (Nintendo – NES)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Ultra – NES)
Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain (Lucasfilm Games – DOS) [This is the best flight sim that has ever happened, and getting a three button joystick so I could play it was a huge event once]

1990

Champions of Krynn (SSI – DOS)
DuckTales (Capcom – NES)
Mission: Impossible (Ultra – NES)
Sim Earth (Maxis – DOS)
Smash TV (Acclaim – NES)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo – NES)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Arcade Game (Ultra – NES)

1991

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Video Game Adventure (LJN – NES)
F-15 Strike Eagle II (MicroProse – DOS) [Probably the second-best flight sim of all time]
Gateway to the Savage Frontier (SSI – DOS)

1992

Ultima VII: The Black Gate (Origin – DOS) [I don’t think I need to talk this one up]

1993

Empire Deluxe (New World Computing – DOS)
Fantasy Empires (SSI – DOS) [Jason and I probably spent 50% of our waking hours playing this at one point]
F-15 Strike Eagle III (MicroProse – DOS) [Probably the second worst flight sim of all time]
Myst (Cyan – DOS)
Sim Farm (Maxis – DOS) [Oranges FTW]
Ultima VII Part Two: Serpent Isle (Origin – DOS) [Along with The Black Gate, this is probably the best RPG that has ever been made]
Unlimited Adventures (SSI – DOS)

Civilization II: Conflicts in Civilization (MicroProse – PC)
Civ II: Fantastic Worlds (MicroProse – PC)
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (Bethesda – PC)

I still don’t know how I never played Battlespire or Redguard.

Battlespire…was pretty terrible. I only got a couple of levels in. Sort of like if all the dungeon levels in Daggerfall were trying to be like Ultima Underworld wannabes.

And I hated Ultima Underworld, so that should give you some perspective.

Heretic! The Ultima Underworld games were legends in their own time.

So you’re saying I should try and find a copy of Battlespire and play it, because I’d probably like it, right? :P
