This is what mom got the family for Christmas. I think my work here is probably done.
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

In which I finally, after three years or so, finish all 1,147 pages of Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which is about precisely what it says on the cover. Tried reading it once in grade school, put it down, picked it back up in the later stages of my stay in CT, and here I am writing a blog post to mark the occasion. I don’t think it’s taken me this long to finish a book ever. Not, I note, because it’s a bad book – while long, it’s well-written enough, though Shirer is heavily biased (and fond of ad hominem), and informative – but because it’s a depressing subject. One wants to point out the […]

“Don’t be fooled by that. It’s just as meaningful to say that our ancestors could easily have been very much like squirrels.” “If that’s all we have to go on, that’s something.” “Squirrels never built starships. There are usually a few changes on the way from gathering nuts and seeds to harvesting asteroids and putting permanent research stations on the moons of Saturn.” —Ender’s Game
“Well, solo silver seems to be going pretty well. I wonder if I can solo my way through gold.” Yes, I can, even though I was a bit underleveled for it and the damage bonuses I skipped would have helped. My M-99 Saber kroguard and I are pretty damn good together after all this time, and while I had to pop a bunch of consumables, it turns out that the biggest problem with soloing on gold isn’t the sheer number of dudes, or the multiple bosses, it’s the fact that you have to kill 5,687 mooks on every wave, for like an hour. Eventually it gets kind of trying, but perseverence pays off. Geth bombers are easily the most annoying […]
In case you can’t read the text, that’s me soloing silver. In 40 minutes. With a kroguard. And in the process completing 85% of this weekend’s challenge. It’s like somewhere in the last week we all just decided to get good at this game.
Butt-Kicking, For Obsessiveness

In which I’m kind of laying down a couple of markers to myself before I set about playing through Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition here in a hopefully short time. In other words, I’m trying to figure out what I want to play, and in going back through my old parties, I realized I haven’t very well consolidated all my various playthroughs together. So we’re going to do that. With pictures that I painstakingly hacked together in GIMP. No less than 9 of them. It may be that I like this game a bit (too much). I didn’t call it the Ravings of Demented Rabbits because I was sane, folks.
Dragon Age 2

Continuing in my trend towards belated reviews of Dragon Age games, let’s talk about Dragon Age 2 a bit. There is, I think it safe to say, no small amount of controversy about this game: Bioware selling out to the EA treadmill? The dumbing down of Dragon Age? I’ve heard it called both these and more besides. And I think both of these are kind of true, as I’ll elaborate on in time. Before answering any of this, I think I should note that I bought my copy for $8 on Amazon. If I had paid $60, I would likely be saying very different things. Now then.
