A bit short this month, because on the one hand these massive seasons of television take ages to plow through, but on the other because I was kind of busy going outside. You may have noticed the odd post with pictures in it. Yeah. It’s raining and crappy out now. Take that how you will. I was told to go take a picture of bunnies in the dark. Here you are. Don’t say I never do anything for you.

I Have Orders to Post These
By Dwip October 17, 2014 at 10:15 pm Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

Apparently, if I don’t give the ladies who read the blog for the pretty pictures more pictures, they get angry. I’m not really into the whole anger thing, so here we are. Took another trip to Finley, because Hana wanted texture pics. Most of them look like that one up there, and there’s only so many of those I feel like showing you.

On the Highways and Byways

“Oregon has excellent LOD“, Hana tells me, and since she’s half the reason I’m out doing all this photoblogging for you all, let’s show off a bit more of it. These are something of a grab bag of sources – my Canon, the loaner Samsung, in cars, out of cars, multiple days, what have you. Any graphical disparities you may see are actually the subliminal messages taking hold. Soon, rabbits shall rule the world!

I Saw an Owl On Woodpecker Loop

…but he flew away before I could get a picture off. Sorry. Today we’re going to Finley Wildlife Refuge, which is directly between Corvallis and Monroe, and a place I have been many, many times given that it’s just about in my back yard. I’ve been there for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, school, just because Dad wanted to go, and a couple times just because I wanted to go. And now you can go too.

I Got Stung Here Once
By Dwip October 11, 2014 at 8:57 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

This is the latest in a now fairly long line of things I want to show you in Oregon, brought about by the arrival of a loaned camera of a rather newer vintage than my 5 year old Canon. I’ll talk more about that in another post. Alsea Falls is, if not literally down the road from where I grew up, not all that far away. Consequently, I was here many, many times in the 80s and early 90s, but it’s probably been 15 or 20 years since I’ve been back. Dumb, considering how close I lived to it, but there you go.

ISO 80, Daylight, Vivid
By Dwip October 10, 2014 at 7:05 am Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

So, there’s a bit of a thing with my camera (a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS) where the Auto settings don’t quite generate the picture quality you might hope for – lots of noise. So I decided to play with camera settings a bit. Setting ISO to 80 gets rid of most of the noise outdoors, and so that problem solved I decided to play with some more things – what does setting the white balance to Daylight do? How about color balance to Vivid? So I spent most of the day wandering around taking random test shots. Here are some of them. ISO 80 is staying, but Daylight and Vivid get you intro trouble with clouds.

It’s Been So Long Since I’ve Seen the Ocean, Part 2
By Dwip October 6, 2014 at 4:17 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

Part 2 of my excursion to Newport. This is the tunnel leading from a parking area under the roadway to Agate Beach, which is one of the closest to Newport and one I went to many times as a kid. I’ve got fond memories of that tunnel.

It’s Been So Long Since I’ve Seen the Ocean, Part 1
By Dwip October 5, 2014 at 4:04 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

Guess I should. So, in a fit of insanity brought on by my crazy sleep schedule lately, I decided to take a 50 mile trip over the mountains to Newport and the Oregon coast. This has been a while coming – despite our many, many trips to the coast when I was a kid, I think it’s probably been ten years since I’ve been back, and about five since I’ve seen the ocean in any capacity. I just needed the right day to fix that. That was today. Oh man was that today.

Highlander: Season Two
By Dwip October 2, 2014 at 5:43 am Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

Season 1 of Highlander was a fairly rough affair. While the premise and the characters were quite compelling, its low budget, uneven writing, and sometimes wooden acting made it a lot less than it could have been. While Season Two isn’t ever going to make a Highlander fan’s list of best seasons, you can see everything and everyone maturing rapidly over the course of the season. It’s a much more serious show than Season 1 ever was, and most of the camp elements from days of yore have fallen by the wayside. In particular, Highlander has moved away from the truly awful costuming of Season 1, and most everyone is not only wearing something recognizable as post-1989, they look pretty […]

Highlander: Season One
By Dwip October 1, 2014 at 8:44 am Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

As I tried to convey in my little discussion of the movie, while the cheesy parts of Highlander are cheesy as hell, the compelling parts of Highlander are equally compelling, and it should come as a surprise to nobody that the powers that be decided to retcon the hell out of the movie and do a TV show instead. As I will hopefully convey to you over the course of what is likely to be a lot of words, this whole TV experiment used 5 of its 6 seasons to rather great effect, exploring all of the complex interactions, feelings, emotions, and what have you when you have a mortal world with a shadowy population of people who live forever […]
