I was going to talk about this being a short month, on account of the entire second half of it being consumed with my epic bout of pneumonia, which I encourage you all dear readers to never contract in any form because it’s awful, but on second thought I did a lot here. Couple of very solid books, some really good visual entertainment, and a bit more outside that. Too, this is an important month in the history of this project. Some big things in here. YTD stats: January: : 5 books; 5 fiction (2,398 p.) / 2 videos; 2 movies (4.8 h.) February: : 11 books; 7 graphic (1,411 p.); 3 fiction (1,079 p.); 1 non-fiction (12.7 h.) / […]

Continuing My Presidential Winning Streak
By Dwip April 27, 2015 at 6:38 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

This continues our series on this subject begun here. The thing about Cards Against Humanity, you’ve got to be funny, but you’ve got to know your audience. Thus, in a room full of Republicans, can there be any other winning card in this set than “Not contributing to society in any meaningful way.” ? I think not. The management would like to take this time to remind you that it voted for Obama and believes in his policies. But you gotta do what you gotta do, man.

Dragon Age: Miscellany
By Dwip April 19, 2015 at 6:06 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

In which I follow up previous posts related to assorted ages of dragons here, here, and here as I wend my way through Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 before I make my way through to starting Inquisition for the first time. I’m late to this party, I know. As is my custom, I have a few things to say about both games that I didn’t get to in the previous several thousand words on the subject. Yeah, I know. I’ll be sort of brief this time.

Stargate SG-1: Season Three
By Dwip April 19, 2015 at 4:00 am Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

Season 3 is a bit of an oddball – less cohesive than Season 2, a return to the spate of one-offs that marked Season 1, mixed in with some excellent episodes that wrap up old plotlines and introduce some new ones in interesting ways. It’s a mixed bag that somehow manages to work out, even when the main villain isn’t the main villain and the last part of the season has more to do with the next season than this one. On the other hand, no clip show, so there’s that. JAFFA, KREE! THERE ARE SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT

Stargate SG-1: Season Two
By Dwip April 15, 2015 at 3:39 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

Season 2 is something of a transition from the primarily Apophis and going boldly where no Tau’ri have gone before feel of Season 1 to the much larger in scope episodes of later seasons. A truly massive number of new lore elements are introduced in these episodes, which will resonate through the rest of SG-1 and on into Atlantis and Universe. Although Season 2 has some serious clunkers in spots, episodes like The Fifth Race, Serpent’s Song, and 1969 represent some of the absolute best episodes in all of Stargate. Unlike Season 1, where an enormous chunk of the episodes were out of broadcast order for no apparent reason, Season 2 survives mostly intact, with two pairs of episodes swapping […]

Stargate SG-1: Season One
By Dwip April 13, 2015 at 9:02 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

As should have been hinted at by my review of the movie in last month’s log, my next big review project is going to be Stargate, starting with SG-1. I’m a pretty late arrival to the whole thing, with my first watch being in 2009, and I’ve been through the whole lot a couple times since then. But it’s been a few years, so maybe it’s about time to check them out again. From the first, this is a pretty exceptional show. The writers and the people in charge pretty clearly had some ideas of the scope and potential of Stargate as a television series. Worlds to discover. Grand ideas to explore. This is science fiction in the greatest traditions […]
