This Magic Moment
By Dwip December 14, 2007 at 4:09 am Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

I’m coming fairly late to this, having found in roundaboutly via Scalzi, but for the gamers in the audience, I encourage you to go here, and download the audio of Wil Wheaton’s keynote speech from PAX ’07. Because he fairly effortlessly sums up why I’m a gamer, and also because it’s cool to have somebody say “You have died of dysentery” and have a crowd full of people roar in approval. He talks a lot about great moments in his life that are tied to games, and the social aspects of games – arcades in his generation, LAN and console parties and online gaming in mine. And, as I do from time to time, I got to thinking about my […]

Ten and Seven

September 4th, 1997: The Lands of Solan launches on a Smaug 1.2 codebase, with Samson and myself the initial staff. Over time, we will become Alsherok, and our heavily modified Smaug 1.4 code will become the influential AFKMud base. Here I will hone my proficiencies in area building, game design, and even write a few lines of code. September 12th, 2000: I join Tonto Clan, the last of the third wave of membership. Here I met a lot of great people. While I played a lot of great games of Age of Kings as a Tonto, I also had debates, offered advice, and ranted a lot. Indeed, you’re reading this because my Rants of the Day series prompted Whir to […]

Life Or Gaming Like It
By Dwip February 9, 2007 at 12:48 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

So in the discussion threads for my management class, I spent a fair amount of time talking about my job at CC in relation to how management through fear does not, in fact, keep the peasants in line. Fair enough, I guess. Nice actual job experience. And then, in the thread about participatory management, I wrote quite a bit detailing my experiences as Head Builder for Alsherok, and how to motivate one’s employees to contribute ideas and suchlike. I can tell you right now, when I was 17 and getting my assistant KL gig on Shard, I did not think to myself “Wow, this will totally be valuable management experience later on in life!” For that matter, I didn’t exactly […]

Why We Fear Projlist
By Dwip January 21, 2007 at 5:06 pm Comments Off on Why We Fear Projlist RSS Feed for this post

An approximate conversation from last night: Me: *surfing through old late-90s email* Man, I sure did say fuck a lot back in the day. Samson: Don’t you still have a great big pink blinking FUCK on your projlist board? Why, yes, I do. Five high ASCII art FUCK in bright pink with a blink tag. Why did I do that? I have no idea. But I think it’s funny.

Blast From the Past
By Dwip January 21, 2007 at 4:58 pm Comments Off on Blast From the Past RSS Feed for this post

So in one of those things where you sit up and say “Hey, 11 years about today I started playing MUDs!” Samson and I were up until about 6am last night (or this morning if you prefer), trying to figure out which areas we wrote when. This is not exactly a trivial exercise. Alsherok has, at present, 103 areas by various authors, counting various storage and otherwise backend areas, and not counting the four or five areas that have been scrapped for one reason or another over the years. I am, for better or worse, the author or significant rewriter on 24 of those various zones over the course of about ten years, plus a few of them that have […]

So we’re all hanging out
By Dwip February 27, 2006 at 6:41 pm Comments Off on So we’re all hanging out RSS Feed for this post

So we’re all hanging out on the MUD… You say ‘So, for today’s humor moment.’ You say ‘We’re all standing around doing work, and over the PA comes “Ron Jeremy, please dial 8130, Ron Jeremy.” about 5 times.’ Whir says ‘ROFL’ Samson says ‘I fail to see the humor’ Whir says ‘For some reason, I’m surprised you know who Ron Jeremey is.’ Whir says ‘Samson, OTOH, obviously doesn’t.’ Samson says ‘because I’m a heathen scum, of course’ Whir says ‘Or you don’t watch porn.’ Samson says ‘As if I care what their names are’ Whir says ‘It’s not that you don’t care what their names are, Mein Furher, it’s that everyone ever has heard of Ron Jeremy.’ Samson says ‘obviously […]

For the MT Readers In the Audience

So I forgot that in Bywater on Alsherok, there’s, yes, Largo’s Fine Weaponry. Predating MT by 4 odd years. Boy is that appropriately funny. Platinum Sindhae is kicking Thag’s ass.

Today In History

Wherein the non-MUD types, which I realize is most of you, flee in terror. However, I realized something the other day. I’ve been doing this, more or less, for about ten years this week. A long time ago, on a MUD far, far away, a certain dwarven warrior, who we shall call Dwip, began randomly jumping through portals in GD. Of the ones I remember, I definitely got killed by sahuagin in sea elves (an area where you take groups of level 50s) at least twice, drowned to death (probably in sea elves) at least once, and for the longest time thought the Gypsy encampment was next to Gwynned Dyr (it’s on the other side of the world). Those were […]

To Make the Impossible Fix
By Dwip September 8, 2005 at 3:50 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

To quote Samson: “I bring news! The function which shall not be named has been defeated. Ironically with a single line of source code being corrected.” To quote Whir, upon hearing the news: “SOMEONE FIXED RD_PARSE?!” And for the rest of you, well, it’s a MUD thing. rd_parse is the function that controls damage dice for spells and things. And for the longest time, and we’re talking since 1997 or so, it had some serious issues with not working. Said issues prompted me personally to attempt rewrites at least twice, and plenty of others to do the same over the years. One line of code. Dammit. For those of you who could care less, I’ll write up my experiences amongst […]

Textual Harassment
By Dwip June 12, 2005 at 11:33 pm Comments Off on Textual Harassment RSS Feed for this post

Our title is, apparently, somebody’s name on the MT forums. Just so you know. In tribute to our misbegotten MUDing past, I quote Cole: “something of note, i just threatened Xorith with the spamming of his e-mail addy with ads from “Cam’s Lesbian Puking Sheep and Razor Bladed Dildo Emporium”” Maybe you had to be there, back in the day. But the same mind that gave rise to the squirrel aliens also came up with the LPSes and the RBD. Fear. With great fear.

Just for Regina: Anyway. It’s picture day. I came home tonight with Megatokyo Volume 1 and Volume 2, but I won’t give you pictures. And they’re both really cool, even if I’ve already read the comics online. But since I’m the only Megatokyo reader in the audience, you probably don’t care. Fortunately, I have squirrel aliens on my side, and you don’t. Also, I played some Mechwarrior, so we’ll start with those pictures. The new set came out a couple weeks ago, and Ryan and Luke split a case between them. That’s the background of the picture. In the foreground is a tiny fraction of Rema’s collection. Rema has a lot of stuff. And my random stuff is all in […]

Until the End of the World
By Dwip February 4, 2004 at 4:36 am Comments (8) RSS Feed for this post

(You non-MUD types will have to forgive this one, I’m afraid.) Well, here we are, camped inside Argalath’s Keep, sleeping after beating the hell out of some undead. Oddly appropriate time to be saying this, I guess. One score days and eight years ago, I came forth into the world of Multi-User Dungeons. It was January of 1996. I’m all of 15 and a month. I’d had my first computer of my very own, a blazing fast P166 with a monster 1.2 gig hard drive, and it was about time to explore the wonders of the Internet. Understand that I’ve been playing Dungeons and Dragons since 1993 or so, and roleplaying was something akin to life at that point. So […]

Light My Fire

The Forest [Exits: North East South West] You stand in the midst of a huge forest. The trees here are huge, and tower far above you. All around you, deer move through the trees, and occasionally you can see a figure dressed in green and brown leather, observing you through the brush. A small stream can be seen through the trees to the north and west. (Magical) A magical fire burns brightly. (627) Xaxtnilax the Greater Sage is standing here. Remember, only YOU can start forest fires. Casting all those took like 5 hours, btw. All to get a measly 12k xp, level 13, and 95% adept in create fire. Argh.

In the Continuing Search For Greatness

I promised I’d shut up about gaming, didn’t I? Well, I fibbed. Or rather, I promised I’d shut up about Ultima 7. Well, I’ve been playing Ultima 4 all day, so you’re just going to have to put up with me. Today’s topic: The Top 20 Best Games of All Time. Why that, you ask? Because I’ve been reading this and I felt like it. So here we are. This will be slightly unconventional, as Sirian’s list is one of video games. Mine is one of all games, period. I’m funny like that. Also, this is no real order, as I lack the patience to categorize to that degree. So. 1. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Second Edition (TSR, 1989): I […]

Diary of a Madrabbit
By Dwip October 9, 2003 at 8:07 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

In lieu of ranting about life again, which involved me A, hating class a lot and B, running into a number of interesting women, I shall post this rather more interesting snippet of conversation from Alsherok. No, it makes no sense. No, it doesn’t need to. You say ‘Info: Belamon (11) killed by A Giant Rabbit at 5452’ You say ‘Once more, the freedom fighters strike a blow against the tyrranical opressors.’ You say ‘Join us! Rise against the tyrranical opressors! Fight the power! Fuck the police! Kill adventurers! Power to the rabbits!’ A Giant Rabbit chats ‘Rise up against the oppressors! Revolt! Revolt! Raise the banner of revolution!’ A Giant Rabbit points at Belamon accusingly. A Giant Rabbit chats […]

Yes Whir, here’s a blog update. Let’s see… Not much happening, really. Finished my latest Kings of the French turn finally, after decades of vicious slaughter in the east, and will now need to write up a story for it. RBP-10A finished as well, with us winning by a surprise UN victory. Just finished my Sirian’s Sandbox turn. *shrug* Also, I played some Bloodmoon. I like it. There’s a lot of snow, a lot of Nords, dead and otherwise, a lot of wildlife, most of it now dead, and a lot of nifty quests and items and stuff. About everything one would expect. Good stuff. On the real life front, well, I need a job. I really, really need a […]
