Harking back to the humor of yore, a conversation during Battletech last night: “Man, I’m stuck in my Atlas on the 8th level of this building. Hey, we can shoot the walls, right? How about the floor?” “Uh…yeah, I guess? Why not?” BAM BAM BAM BAM “Well, you’re falling through the floor now, so, uh, I guess that’s good. And it looks like your falling damage is going to do enough to break through the next floor down, and it looks like there’s a Quickdraw under you, so I guess roll to see if you slam into him…” “I did.” *they roll for damage* “Well, the good news is, you’re both still alive after that 8 level plummet of doom. So, to explain that video in the last post slightly better, I’ve been a gamer since approximately the dawn of time by the reckoning of those dang kids today, and from time to time I like to play games that, were they people would be in high school about now. Yeah, most of my readers who are older than me, I know. In the Days of Yore, that meant episodes like this one, but as time advances and my Jurassic hardware falls to the stone clubs and axes of rampaging Neanderthals, other solutions are needed. Which is where Microsoft Virtual PC comes in. And since it turns out that games from the mid-90s are so old they won’t even run […]

BT Map Updates
By Dwip April 14, 2011 at 3:41 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

To quote myself: Man, CC2 is SO 2007. I bet I could get way better looking maps in CC3. Probably a template that doesn’t make me want to claw my eyes out, too. Most notably, I can do way better building graphics than that with CD3. Also must get trees that do not suck horrendously. So I went and did that thing. Or rather, I did something very much like it a year or two ago and never got back to it, so I just updated a bunch and ran with it, which I’ll talk a bit about with shiny pictures below the jump.

Something I’ve been meaning to mention since the move, and the arrival of my Amazon order today brought it back to mind: When I moved, I sent about 30 boxes of stuff via USPS. Didn’t figure it would be a problem, since I’d shipped or had shipped 10 or 15 boxes in the past, and they all showed up in pristine condition. Of this latest batch, let’s say 4/5 of them arrived in some kind of damaged state, ranging from holes in the cardboard to complete retaping and plastic bands around the box. On average, most of these boxes were a foot cubed, 20-30 pounds but for the few that were 40ish. No big deal. As I say, I’ve done […]

With a nod to FR7. Firstly, a couple of blog changes, namely: 1. The front page now displays the last three entries as opposed to the last two, to make easier times like this when I spam my blog. 2. Comments now open in a new window, although they do not do this properly, and I cannot for the life of me figure out WHY. But this at least half works. Anyway. This post has a pretty lengthy and circuitous route to existance, being rooted in an almost post about great gaming moments. Then I got to thinking about the character of Jon Irenicus, and said “You know, I bet people would find a post about great characters more interesting.” […]

First, a word from our Battletech sponors. Remember: In the 31st century, life is cheap. Battlemechs are expensive. This is why, in Friday night’s BT game against Cole, I found myself, in our long-delayed debut of the epic Bridge War map, facing off against, yes, 4 Warhammers and an entire reinforced battalion (15 platoons) of 0 gunnery elite jump rifle infantry riding unarmed VTOL transports, who dropped all over the place in my backfield and annoyed my side a lot. For the BT fans among you, I just had to write down every single warship and aerospace fighter in Clan Snow Raven. Let me assure you that there are a lot of them. It took me all day. Some people need to think a LOT harder before writing rules, let us say. Anyway. So, in previous episodes, we have learned that Our Hero, whilest semi-gainfully employed at the library, can pull things off the shelf and check them out. In this week’s episode, we note that Our Hero can do this with CDs, whereupon he returns to Monroe with a Donnas CD, a Kings of Leon CD, and a 4 disc Ozzy Osbourne set. Thus further leads Our Hero to […]

The new support vehicle construction rules in the Battletech Combat Equipment Guide are way too much fun. Then there’s this: Clan Monocycle of Doom: Weight: 100 kg (Monocycle, Ultra-light chassis) Engine: Fusion Cruise MP: 15 (162.0 km/h) Flank MP: 23 (248.4 km/h) Weapons and Equipment: Heavy Recoilless Rifle w/Advanced FCS (2 shots) Cost: 4,789 C-Bills BV: 81 Yes, Virginia, they do make 29 kg fusion engines in the future. While I recognize that most of you will have no freaking clue what I’m talking about, I find it heartily amusing that, no matter how much Liao or Jade Falcon I play in MWDA, I never seem to win with them, yet the instant I go back to my Spirit Cat light mech roots, I suddenly kick ass all over the place. Yes, in a total triumph of old school I’ve-had-these-pieces-since-I-first-started-playing-two-years-ago pieces, Kym Nova Cat, Malisa Nova Cat, a Locust, of all things, and a Panther pretty much totally cleaned up in our multiplayer lance battles last night. Pretty much accept that I’ve been doing a bit of reading, a bit of gaming, and a bit of random other stuff, like torturing myself on the hill out front. So, the reading. Omar Bradley’s book isn’t bad. It’s not like you didn’t know all of the stuff he says already, but it’s interesting merely because he’s saying it. By contrast, Hans von Luck was a Wehrmacht officer who, amongst other things, was with Rommel a bunch, which is pretty interesting. He also had the misfortune to get captured by the Russians, where he spent 1945-1950 working in POW camps. Which sucks for him, but is […]

But we’ll make attempts. Starting with commentary on Mechwarrior, along the lines of, well, if it’s a collectable game, I ought to, you know, collect stuff. Like, say, all the Ullers. Everyone say hi to Malisa Nova Cat. Yay Malisa! That aside, yesterday I sat down and said “I need to listen to U2’s Slane Castle show some more.” And I did. As in, I won my first tourney, and even got a token fellowship vote despite my A, winning which excludes me from that, and B, my thinking that I was being somewhat of a dick the whole night. This is nice to know. The games themselves went like this: First one involved me stringing out the other army, chopping it to bits inch by inch, meanwhile avoiding the Behemoth tank waiting to obliterate me. Met a few people, went to MW:DA where I got my head handed to me twice, then proceeded to do major league stompage in a game that involved: The Bannson’s Legionnaire charging Malisa Nova Cat and missing the 10-to-hit charge. Malisa Nova Cat retaliating with a full alpha strike. A Bannson’s peasant company pulling off a 17-to-hit capture on my Scorchers. A Bannson’s peasant company needing a 17 to capture my Po tank in hindering, and missing by 1. Me getting my first full sweep in a long, long time. Good fun. Back here in the real world, the main event […]

Back to the Future

So we played the second session of our MW3 game tonight. Wherein after being massively dropped on by Blakists, and all nearby settlements blown up with nuclear weapons, Our Heroes run to the hills, where they recruit a few conscripts for La Resistance: The back hills hick with half a machine shop, the random investment banker, the random doctor, and the random hillbillies with 4 kids, one of whom is their only ICE engine repairman. So while half the PCs stay back to guard the fort and build stuff, the other two take off in the investment banker’s Lamborghini aircar to scout out the main town in the area. As it turns out, they’re spotted by Blakist air patrols, and […]

Transcending the Role
By Dwip September 17, 2003 at 4:59 am Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

Much to say, and it’s all me and roleplaying games. So those of you what don’t play em, sorry. But just for Whir, I played MW3, and you didn’t, so nyah. So this last Sunday I got invited to play in the D&D campaign that Rema (who runs the MW:DA games I’m in) runs, and Griselda (of RBCiv fame, and who I think has been lurking here without saying hi… ;)) plays in, along with a couple of the other MW:DA folks and another guy I didn’t really know. Needless to say, I accepted. Please, don’t twist my arm too hard… ;) The character I come up with is a diplomat/spy type rogue, grew up in the streets but is […]

The Best of Giant Robot Games
By Dwip September 16, 2003 at 1:22 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

This isn’t the actual update I promised, but I was pondering the want to put this up somewhere, and here’s good. So this a post I made over on the Classic Battletech boards. Whir will be amused, even if nobody else is. Back before we understood the fire rules, we had a fire spread over an entire map. Something like two lances of light and medium jumpers are leaping all over the place in fire and smoke, lining up rear shots at point blank range. Had this big chain of mechs winding all over the board. Playing on Large Mountain/Heavy Woods. Mechs on both sides I think were Pack Hunter clones or the like. He’s in the woods, jumps a […]

Adventures In the Big City

Yes Whir, I do update every so often. So we, and by we I mean me, Cole/Clyos, and his brother, went up to Corvallis yesterday. Checked out the apartment their going to be getting. Funny place. I can’t quite stand on my toes and touch the ceiling with my head, but it’s close. Plus every room has a distinctly different style – shingle walls, fake brick, wood panels… very amusing. Gas stove from like the 40s. But cheap. And large. Can’t ask for much more. And it’s just them. I predict hanging out over there a bunch. Went to the bookstore, too, which made my wallet $274 lighter after I got my books for school. I am going to be […]

“Hanse Davion is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me shoot down CCAF troops in green pastures, he recons the enemy beside quiet waters, he restores the Federated Commonwealth. He guides us with pathfinders for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no Capellan, for the AFFC and his mercenaries are with me; your AC and your Hatchet, they comfort me. You prepare a secure LZ before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my ammo bin overflows. Surely victory and pacification will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of […]

Happiness Is A Warm Gun
By Dwip August 22, 2003 at 4:50 am Comments (20) RSS Feed for this post

Holy crap am I tired. But more on that in a sec. Wednesday was MWDA night, of course. Liao Incursion xpack is now out, and we had a sealed booster to get in, which meant $30 and a random army because you could only use what you drew in the boosters you bought. So I get a pair of uniques out of my first two boosters. There’s, I dunno, 5 or 10 uniques per case, like 50 boxes a case if I remember all this right, and I got 2. Rock on. But it shortchanged my army, which meant I got stomped hard – 1 kill all night and it was a defenseless scout chopper. But I cleaned up on […]

An Update
By Dwip August 15, 2003 at 3:11 am Comments Off on An Update RSS Feed for this post

So I needed a break from figuring out the convoluted early history of Elven civilization in Duranth. I hate it when I totally abandon actual historical lessons and have to deal with thousand-year wars. Gah. Anyway. I’ve started playing HRE again. Firebird gave me his writeup, and hopefully Marechal will have that and his own writeup ready to post soon. As for me, I’ve a 17 y/o Emperor with a broke province to deal with. Aeeyah. One of these days we might even play some Tharavel, except for how everybody’s being assholish about giving me characters. So maybe not. Oh well. Until then, there’s MWDA. So I picked up my last week’s Fellowship prize yesterday. A 4-pack of limited edition […]

Oodelaly, Oodelaly, Golly What a Day
By Dwip August 12, 2003 at 8:41 pm Comments (6) RSS Feed for this post

Robin Hood and Little John, running through the fore…no, wait, that’s not it. So the enormously large news of the day is that I’m now, get this, His Excellency, Tonto_Marius, Viceroy of the Empire, Minister of Gaming, Baron of the Other Games Fief. IE, I help run Tonto now. Congratulations are also in order for Regina, who’s also quite high up these days. Can’t say as how I’m glad to be there, though. Those of you who’re there understand what I’m talking about, I think. In other news, Epic 33 is up on the Civ page now. Hella hard. But fun. Played some MWDA down at the shop on Monday for kicks. 2 games. Won the first one, which was […]

Farewall, Merc Balac VTOL
By Dwip August 7, 2003 at 4:47 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

We barely knew you. Or, actually, we knew you very well, because you were one of our single best pieces, but. This would be the weekly MWDA post. I realize nobody actually plays besides me, but that’s just too damn bad, isn’t it? I need to gloat. ;) So here I am, running this trippy 400 point randa-army of Malisa Nova Cat, Kym Nova Cat, some DF Raidens, and the ever-present Merc/RotS Balac VTOLs. My first game, I go up against the Artillery Army of Doom. I hate arty. I die. Badly. His RotS Crimson Hawk takes out my entire side, and I die a lot. Very sad. Malisa Nova Cat misses a 12 to hit alpha strike by 1. […]

The Revenge of Giant Robot Games
By Dwip July 31, 2003 at 3:49 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

So I arrive at the store last night to play some MW:DA, and everybody’s like “You do know about the $15 entry fee tonight, right?” No, not really. “Yeah. The prize is the dropship. And apparently there’s lots more cool stuff, too.” Oh, really. BANK_ACCOUNT == BANK_ACCOUNT – 15; So, to make a long story short, I pretty much dominate my first game, despite playing Dragon’s Fury for some unknown reason, then proceed to get dominated my second and third games, though I was doing ok in my third until I started totally sucking. But I got fellowship. Which resulted in my picking up some good mechs from each faction. And Rema outright gave me a DF Crimson Hawk and […]

I’ve been up for a rediculously long time. I believe I shall sleep first. But not before informing you of several things: 1. I got my copy of FM:Updates today. The Warm Fuzzy Feeling rides again. 2. A Perfect Circle kicks ass. I thank Whir for this. 3. Salsa Doritos also kick ass. In fact, everybody in the afterlife eats a lot of Doritos. 4. I soooo can’t type for anything when I’m tired. Yes. That was one of the lamest blog posts I believe I have ever made. But I’m a DEMENTED rabbit, remember.

On A Completely Different Subject
By Dwip July 25, 2003 at 9:23 pm Comments (8) RSS Feed for this post

Finished Children of the Mind last night. Last book in the series that starts with Ender’s Game. Ponderances on the subject. I’ve heard a lot of people say that you should stop after Speaker For the Dead, some after Ender’s Game itself. I think they’re wrong. For me, Xenocide and Children of the Mind were just as crucial to the plot as the first two. Certainly I found them all as engrossing as the last one, which is to say each one lasted from about 11pm to 6am or so the next morning. The thing about the latter two, though, and especially Children of the Mind, is that Card goes on some really stratospheric philosophy and such. I expect most […]

Hello Out There…
By Dwip June 26, 2003 at 6:52 pm Comments Off on Hello Out There… RSS Feed for this post

Guess I’m not entertaining y’all enough, hrm? Except Whir, but Whir has no life, so he’s allowed. Not that much has been going on, lately. Job hunting sucks a whole lot. It’s like “job market? You mean Oregon has a JOB MARKET!? You LIE!” But the extracurricular activities go strong. Such as, yknow, the Kings of the French, which I have another reign report to write for, having finished my all of 9 year kingship. Played some more Mechwarrior: Dark Age last night, and sucked the first time, had a close battle the second time, and dominated so hard the third time I cleaned him off the map without losing a unit. That was cool. Did some reading, too. Finished […]

It’s Getting Better All the Time
By Dwip June 19, 2003 at 5:34 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

Or I am, anyway. MW:DA night last night. Mostly clear field, 600 point armies with only 3 orders, so I built what felt like an overgunned 300 point army. All Spirit Cats, 3 mechs, 6 shock troopers, and 3 vehicles, and my brand new Merc Balac VTOL I traded Cole for last time, and my ONLY VTOL. That thing rocks. It got me VC3 twice, as I ran it into the other guy’s end zone and just stayed there. It was going to save me from Cole, except time ran out. Ah well. Anyway, the first game was me dancing around, trying to avoid the other guy’s LE Mad Cat Mk II that was ruling my world, while picking off […]

In the eeeeeeeevning… *loud drums/guitar* Or something. So on the plus side of this last week, Wednesday I played some great MW:DA. Thursday I saw Matrix: Reloaded (can’t find my copy of the original – how annoying). Friday I went out with Tali and Laura, had ice cream, played cards, enjoyed the weather. Saturday I went out with Tali and Laura, threw a frisbee around for a while, enjoyed the weather, ate some good pizza, and watched a really bad 60’s horror flick. Good times. And today I got fed. Yay.

Let’s see. Whir wants a blog update. What’s been happening. Still going out of my mind doing papers and shit for classes. STILL haven’t taken my Greece midterm ’cause the prof’s been out for some reason. Did my “redesign the history board” project this morning and turned it in. Will do my second archives visit tomorrow, then write the paper. Then somehow I will get together four books on one of: Diocletian, Constantine, the entire Fall of the Roman Empire, or something wildly out there. THEN I will read Xenophon’s Anabasis and write THAT paper. THEN I will write the paper on the Diocletian thing. I think I forgot a paper or test or something in there. Whatever. I just […]

By Dwip May 2, 2003 at 3:25 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

So about a week ago, I’m poking around over at RBCiv, and I notice a random non-there link. So I whip out ye olde email proggy, fire off an email to Griselda over there. Yeah, you’re sort of missing a link, and oh by the way I changed my website addy, so a bunch of my links are broken. Next thing I know, I get one back to the effect of “Say, noticed you live in Corvallis. Well, so do I. We should get together sometime.” It’s a six inch world, some days. So to make a long story short, we do on Tuesday, and there’s much talking about Civ, D&D, school, you name it. Good times. What’s more, I […]

Giant Robot Games

So the Monroe gang all got together last night for some serious gaming action. Thinking some LAN action, some Mechwarrior 3 playing, and whatever else. We got the LAN part in, anyway. Hours and hours of serious Mechwarrior 4 playing. Fear Gausszilla. Fear Gausszilla muchly. Actually got the whole LAN working this time, too. Usually it fails, but this time we got it working. So there were some serious 5-way melees going on while Jason was off in the corner working on some obscene MW3 character. We’ll play next time, really. Honest. And as is custom at these things, somebody’s car died at 3am and needed a jump. Jason’s, this time. Currently at the bottom of the hill with a […]
