Ok, it’s Saturday and there’s a new #bgee patch out. I promised to tweet through it, so let’s do this. — Erik Wolfe (@afk_dwip) December 15, 2012 So, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition came out a month ago, and if you know me at all, you know I’m a huge fan of this series. If you kept track of the comments on the Twitter review of Neverwinter Nights 2 I did, you’ll know I promised to do something like it for BG:EE, and sure enough here we are. If you’re just joining us (hi Twitter!), you should be aware that I’ve played the game a few times, going all the way back to the pre-TotSC days. About 5 years ago, I […]

Butt-Kicking, For Obsessiveness

In which I’m kind of laying down a couple of markers to myself before I set about playing through Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition here in a hopefully short time. In other words, I’m trying to figure out what I want to play, and in going back through my old parties, I realized I haven’t very well consolidated all my various playthroughs together. So we’re going to do that. With pictures that I painstakingly hacked together in GIMP. No less than 9 of them. It may be that I like this game a bit (too much). I didn’t call it the Ravings of Demented Rabbits because I was sane, folks.

Gaming Archaeology

So a couple of days ago, Samson wrote a post about excavating old gaming artifacts. And, as I am a gamer of a certain age and also myself, I thought to myself “What does my version of that look like?” Well. Lots of boxes. Less rocks and dragon statues because I didn’t snag many collector’s editions. Sadly missing most of my old floppy games. But still, I put together a list.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Gameplay
By Dwip March 22, 2011 at 10:14 pm Comments (9) RSS Feed for this post

I promised in my last post that I would sit down and write a post talking about some of the design issues in NWN2. Instead, I think I’m going to do two posts – one on the way NWN2’s story got told, and this one that you’re reading, which will discuss elements of the gameplay, by which I primarily mean things like dungeon and encounter design. You may recall that I’ve talked about this before in relation to Valve games, but I want to take a slightly different tack here.

Butt-Kicking, For Mods
By Dwip March 3, 2009 at 5:30 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

Oh, you know you love Baldur’s Gate posts. I mean, the game’s like 10 years old and I’m the only who still plays it, so how can you not love that? Anyway. Insofar as I keep meaning to put this down on paper (of a sort), and because BG/BG2 happen to be about the only games installed on my laptop, let us talk mods and new parties for a sec, as I have a few things I wish to do yet. First, the outstanding games: Najah (NE Elf Male Assassin) BG1 Tutu end date 12/12/05 (Level 10) BG2 stop date 09/11/06 (Level 16) I think he may actually be slightly better than this now, and I’m going to load him […]

I’m coming fairly late to this, having found in roundaboutly via Scalzi, but for the gamers in the audience, I encourage you to go here, and download the audio of Wil Wheaton’s keynote speech from PAX ’07. Because he fairly effortlessly sums up why I’m a gamer, and also because it’s cool to have somebody say “You have died of dysentery” and have a crowd full of people roar in approval. He talks a lot about great moments in his life that are tied to games, and the social aspects of games – arcades in his generation, LAN and console parties and online gaming in mine. And, as I do from time to time, I got to thinking about my […]

Continuing the series begun here, and continued here and here. In which I finally, after many years, bring my time with Nargol the Bard to an end: Nargol: (CN Half-Elf Male Bard) BG1 stop date 09/24/00 (Level 6); Coran, Kivan, Branwen, Xan, Yeslick BG1 end date 08/16/06 (Level 10); Coran, Kivan, Branwen, Xan, Yeslick BG2 end date 06/17/07 (Level 25); Haer’Dalis, Mazzy, Jan, Xan, Aerie ToB end date 11/23/07 (Level 37); Haer’Dalis, Mazzy, Jan, Xan, Aerie It took me slightly more than 7 years to finish Nargol’s run through the game, which I suppose tells you a lot about how fun bards are to play in BG2. It’s not so much that they’re bad, because they aren’t, really, it’s that, […]

With a nod to FR7. Firstly, a couple of blog changes, namely: 1. The front page now displays the last three entries as opposed to the last two, to make easier times like this when I spam my blog. 2. Comments now open in a new window, although they do not do this properly, and I cannot for the life of me figure out WHY. But this at least half works. Anyway. This post has a pretty lengthy and circuitous route to existance, being rooted in an almost post about great gaming moments. Then I got to thinking about the character of Jon Irenicus, and said “You know, I bet people would find a post about great characters more interesting.” […]

First Wikipedia, then the world! Also this, just ’cause. And a bit of gaming action, also just ’cause. NWN2 – I thought having to run through a wall of fire to get their guys was cool. It didn’t save them, but. And the extra-special “Yeah, BG2 is still cool.” shot. That’s from the Solaufien mod, and check out how many effect icons Sola has, anyway. That fight was more than just a little out of control, as you might be able to tell. Each of my mages (3) went in there with contigencies, spell triggers, and lesser spell triggers, plus other buff spells. I shot off something like 3 Abu-Dazim’s Horrid Wiltings, 6 Cloudkills, a couple of Teleport Fields, and […]

Butt-Kicking, For Goodness! Part III

Brought on by TNK talking about Planescape: Torment (a game I sorely need to play one of these days), a bit of BG2 rambling, since I actually played an entire game of it while traveling across the country. So let us make a couple of additions to this list here. I should put all of this on a page somewhere one of these days. Najah (NE Elf Male Assassin) BG1 Tutu end date 12/12/05 (Level 10) BG2 stop date 09/11/06 (Level 16) At the bottom of the old list, I mention a couple of things I really wanted to do, two of which were soloing a thief through, and soloing BG1. I also wanted to test out a mod called […]

Talked to _real for a time tonight. This was, in general, good, because we haven’t talked for a while, and Ken has always pretty much been the Man. This does bring me to a sort of strange place, though. I think I’m tired, because these things always happen when I’m tired. At any rate, I guess Tonto Clan, as heard through _real and assorted conversation on Regina’s blog, is going to die the final death on December 12th or so. Happy birthday, me. This is all fairly strange, because I haven’t been able to get to Tonto in I don’t know how many months but a lot, and had assumed it was already dead. To find that it was apparently […]

Because I’m not done yet. You people who could care less (which I realize is almost everyone) can just deal. First, a pretty picture for everyone. Yes, I’m getting totally schooled. Keldorn, Minsc, and Jahiera are dead or out of it, and big ass demons are eating the rest of my team. However, this is way more fun than, say, the Diablo fight or the Mount Arreat fight was. Just so we’re all clear that even losing is fun in this game. There’s only one fight I get overly frustrated with, and…well, let’s not talk about that. Let us make note of those characters of yore, and demonstrate this whole replayability thing I keep talking about. Thag (CN Dwarf Male […]

Because Minsc rocks, Boo rocks, and we all know it. We haven’t had a good CRPG post around here in a while, and I’ve been ranting about the Baldur’s Gate games for a while now, so let us just hark back to the days of yore and do so, since I just got done taking Ergos and party through the trilogy. Some of you have wondered about my sad devotion to those ancient games (BG1 dates to 1998), which I have attempted to answer, and never quite got out. So let us attempt once more. It’s easier to talk about what the original Baldur’s Gate did wrong rather than what it did right, because it got an awful lot right. […]

By Dwip October 31, 2003 at 6:46 am Comments (6) RSS Feed for this post

I promised I’d shut up about gaming, didn’t I? Well, I fibbed. Or rather, I promised I’d shut up about Ultima 7. Well, I’ve been playing Ultima 4 all day, so you’re just going to have to put up with me. Today’s topic: The Top 20 Best Games of All Time. Why that, you ask? Because I’ve been reading this and I felt like it. So here we are. This will be slightly unconventional, as Sirian’s list is one of video games. Mine is one of all games, period. I’m funny like that. Also, this is no real order, as I lack the patience to categorize to that degree. So. 1. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Second Edition (TSR, 1989): I […]
