Gaming Archaeology

So a couple of days ago, Samson wrote a post about excavating old gaming artifacts. And, as I am a gamer of a certain age and also myself, I thought to myself “What does my version of that look like?” Well. Lots of boxes. Less rocks and dragon statues because I didn’t snag many collector’s editions. Sadly missing most of my old floppy games. But still, I put together a list.

This is a thing which just happened. Me: Ah yes, the Civilization 5 xpack, Gods and Kings came out today. I’d best go get that. *drives to Gamestop* Me: Hey, so, uh, Gods and Kings. Any copies? Gamestop: Sorry, pre-orders only. Me: I see. Any idea when you’ll get more? Gamestop: Not really. Me: I see. Well, thanks. *drives home* Me: Hey Steam, I bet you can solve this. Steam: Yes, but you need to click three buttons and a checkbox. Me: This seems reasonable. *does so* Steam: Install will probably take about 10-15 minutes. Me: Great. Just enough time for a shower. Perfect. And here we are. Because, you know, as much fun as scheduling my life around somebody […]

Steam Interfaces Are Ruining Everything

With a nod towards this blog, which has nothing whatsoever to do with anything but has the coolest title ever. A couple of interface quirks I’d like to talk about for a bit here.  Two of them are quite brief: 1. Dear GIMP people. I would enjoy using your program more if it included such basic features as line tools and basic shape drawing.  Please also note that if you have to resort to the level of elitist sarcasm shown in this tutorial (official, no less), you have failed.  On that same note, I would enjoy using your program more if your user interface didn’t suck the good suck, but let’s stick with things that are changable, here. 2. I had […]

Ponderings On the Great War
By Dwip July 15, 2008 at 1:04 pm Comments Off on Ponderings On the Great War RSS Feed for this post

Because I haven’t really talked Civ for a while, and I just played a pretty epic game. Every so often, you have this desire, when playing world maps, to conquer the world. This is the unquestionable natural order of things. The world is there, we desire to conquer it and bend it to our wills, preferably while killing several million of its other digital inhabitants. I had not previously done this, preferring to win instead by space or culture or what have you, becase do you know how much land you need to conquer to go from this: To the winning 51% land? Quite a lot, as it turns out: During the not quite 5,000 years it took to do […]

In that continued saga of looking at the possibility of editing for various games, let us take a brief glimpse at Civilization IV’s editor. A very brief glance, since, so far as I can tell, the editor that has been provided with the game may as well not actually exist. It turns out that, for something like half of the editing I do, which is random civs in specific spots on a specific map, it turns out that the easiest, most efficient way to make any changes I have is to open the file in Notepad and edit a bunch of random things that look like this: BeginPlot x=19,y=49 BonusType=BONUS_GOLD FeatureType=FEATURE_FOREST, FeatureVariety=0 TerrainType=TERRAIN_PLAINS PlotType=1 EndPlot Deriving the proper X and […]

This is Friend Wedding #2 for the year, and the second one I wasn’t able to be at. I shall make this up to you all. On a rather different note, something for the Civ players in the audience: Meet Pachacuti and Pizzaro, cavalry generals of renown amongst the Khmer. They’re byproducts of a particularly long and vicious war against Genghis Khan and his vassals, Hatshepsut, Isabella, and Peter. To impart upon you the enormity of the situation, a map: The lighter blue with the white […]

First Wikipedia, then the world! Also this, just ’cause. And a bit of gaming action, also just ’cause. NWN2 – I thought having to run through a wall of fire to get their guys was cool. It didn’t save them, but. And the extra-special “Yeah, BG2 is still cool.” shot. That’s from the Solaufien mod, and check out how many effect icons Sola has, anyway. That fight was more than just a little out of control, as you might be able to tell. Each of my mages (3) went in there with contigencies, spell triggers, and lesser spell triggers, plus other buff spells. I shot off something like 3 Abu-Dazim’s Horrid Wiltings, 6 Cloudkills, a couple of Teleport Fields, and […]

Talked to _real for a time tonight. This was, in general, good, because we haven’t talked for a while, and Ken has always pretty much been the Man. This does bring me to a sort of strange place, though. I think I’m tired, because these things always happen when I’m tired. At any rate, I guess Tonto Clan, as heard through _real and assorted conversation on Regina’s blog, is going to die the final death on December 12th or so. Happy birthday, me. This is all fairly strange, because I haven’t been able to get to Tonto in I don’t know how many months but a lot, and had assumed it was already dead. To find that it was apparently […]

Because I guess people want me to be posting stuff, or something. Well, ok. Let’s see here… 1. Civ IV – this game owns, for all applicable values of owningness. If you take almost everything that was ever good about any Civ game ever, and put it in a game, you wind up with something about like Civ IV. About the only complaints I can possibly make of it is that the wonder movies in Civ II were better, and combat is still vaguely annoying to me, in that they tried to nerf stacks by use of collateral damage, and stacks weren’t particularly broken in the first place. However, if another MP game with Whir comes down to me vs […]

Something like 150 more guys show up each and every turn for almost 10 turns until I beat them all down. So, in a strange twist of fate, I find myself reading a number of books on World War II, playing a WWII FPS, and playing a Civ 3 succession game of the WWII in the Pacific scenario all at the same time. Go figure. In any case, I just talked about MoH:PA, and you can read the Civ game for yourselves, so I’ll talk about books. I don’t remember offhand the history of the Pacific war I read. It was, well, the standard US vs Japan history. First, for the avid Civ readers in the audience, I’ve put up a Hall of Fame page with a whole bunch of little game reports and such, including a bunch I never talked about here. Second, we’ll be playing a bunch of D&D later today. Jason’s session, level 8, Forgotten Realms. European theme and all that. So we need characters for this. Erring on the side of normality, Cole and I start with a pair of Kensai from the Oriental Adventures book. Mine’s human, his is a lizardman. They, yknow, kill stuff with swords. A lot. Not for the faint of heart, but I found the first part of this to be cool, in a gruesome sort of way. Makes you realize how enormously uncool it was to be an Aztec. For that matter, I’ll just go ahead and plug the whole Bronze Age New World timeline while I’m here. Very nicely done alternate history. So, hrm. What else have I been doing lately. Well, there’s always Civ 3 Succession Games: RBP10 – The Spanish Explorers Sirian’s Sandbox And then there’s the Medieval: Total War SG: The Kings of the French KoF Comment Thread And then there’s all the school. Stalin final tonight, Anth and Greece tomorrow morning. And then it’s all over for the entire […]

Victory!

Well, the cold is getting worse and worse, and I skipped class to sleep through the damn thing, which sort of worked. Going through fluids like mad. You’d think I was actually sick or something. On the plus side, I’ve finally figured out an acceptable workaround to the image border problem I was having and which was preventing me from doing more site work. It’s not the one I wanted, but might well turn out to be better in the end. We’ll see. And I’m all but finished with Epic 27, Epic 28 opened today and looks like it’ll be a blast, and I just finished a solo game with the Vikings whereupon I got stuck in the most ass […]

It’s A Small World After All…

So about a week ago, I’m poking around over at RBCiv, and I notice a random non-there link. So I whip out ye olde email proggy, fire off an email to Griselda over there. Yeah, you’re sort of missing a link, and oh by the way I changed my website addy, so a bunch of my links are broken. Next thing I know, I get one back to the effect of “Say, noticed you live in Corvallis. Well, so do I. We should get together sometime.” It’s a six inch world, some days. So to make a long story short, we do on Tuesday, and there’s much talking about Civ, D&D, school, you name it. Good times. What’s more, I […]

Three Kings Lives

So I’m sitting here, with my modern armors racing through the ruins of Greece’s cities in the Middle East and into North Africa, and Queen is blaring in the background, and I’m having this weird vision like something out of Three Kings: The Sequel. It’s like this: Column of M1A2s racing through the desert, cloud of dust behind them, big American flag flying on one of em, and in the background We Will Rock You is playing. And somewhere in there is some bullshit thing like, yknow, the C4 football shooting scene or something. The mind is a funny object.
