So, for the last while the accepted way we do voice chat in Mass Effect 3 is actually to run a group voice chat in Steam, because ME3’s push to talk chat is fairly annoying to use in the middle of intense firefights while you’re trying to use seige pulse on that damned Geth Prime. And for the most part it works well. Except today, when Cole’s mic decided that no, it would only work ok when not in Steam. So we tried a 4-way Skype call, and that worked fine except that my AC sounded like, and I quote, “the howling winds of the North” to everyone else, and no way to fix it. Thus, what you’re looking at […]

“Well, solo silver seems to be going pretty well. I wonder if I can solo my way through gold.” Yes, I can, even though I was a bit underleveled for it and the damage bonuses I skipped would have helped. My M-99 Saber kroguard and I are pretty damn good together after all this time, and while I had to pop a bunch of consumables, it turns out that the biggest problem with soloing on gold isn’t the sheer number of dudes, or the multiple bosses, it’s the fact that you have to kill 5,687 mooks on every wave, for like an hour. Eventually it gets kind of trying, but perseverence pays off. Geth bombers are easily the most annoying […]

In case you can’t read the text, that’s me soloing silver. In 40 minutes. With a kroguard. And in the process completing 85% of this weekend’s challenge. It’s like somewhere in the last week we all just decided to get good at this game.

So a couple of days ago, Samson wrote a post about excavating old gaming artifacts. And, as I am a gamer of a certain age and also myself, I thought to myself “What does my version of that look like?” Well. Lots of boxes. Less rocks and dragon statues because I didn’t snag many collector’s editions. Sadly missing most of my old floppy games. But still, I put together a list.

If you’ve been playing Mass Effect 3 multiplayer for long enough, this isn’t really a very big deal – bronze is the lowest difficulty, and after you’ve been a silver player like me for a while, bronze looks pretty simple, even when you’re soloing a 4 player map. Nevertheless, my previous solo attempts met with tragic failure, whereas this time I kicked complete ass, and I’m a little proud of myself for doing so.

I know, right? But trust me. So I got particularly bored the other weekend, having completed my second runthrough of Mass Effect 3 and kind of wanting to play some more Mass Effect 3. I dig shooters with skills and powers. So I decided to try multiplayer. Public multiplayer. I know. What was I thinking.

And now, I AM GOING TO SPOIL THE ENDING OF MASS EFFECT 3. IF THAT’S A PROBLEM, ABORT NOW. Did you already see the ending? this is the appropriate image.

I’ve been kind of putting this one off, because it’s hard to know entirely what to say about this game. If you read my reviews of the first and second games, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of them both, though they are not without their flaws. Am I as big a fan of the third game? I am, but then again I’m really not, and I’m going to try to explain myself on that score, though if you’ve read anything else about Mass Effect 3 on the internet, you’ll probably know what I’m going to say. Nevertheless.

So, you remember back when I was talking about how bullshit getting DLC for Mass Effect 2 was? And how I kind of mentioned dreading how bad Mass Effect 3 was going to be because of Origin? Yeah, so, Mass Effect 3 came out today. And, similar to what I did with the DLC post, let us compare and contrast what it took to get my most recent Steam purchase, Deus Ex: Human Revolution up and running versus how getting Mass Effect 3 up and running is going for me.

So, to quote myself from that last post about DLC: The observant reader will perhaps also understand at this point why I want nothing to do with EA’s new Origin thing, and why I’m now specifically not purchasing EA games at this point. In fact, I very specifically, when given a choice, chose Modern Warfare 3 over Battlefield 3, despite having been sort of meh on the last two CoD games and loving the entire Battlefield series thus far. Should I enjoy ME2 a great deal and actually want ME3, I suspect that’s going to lead to some very tragic places and/or Skyrim modding binges. The strength of Mass Effect 2 is such that I am now forced to reconsider […]

I’m sick and I like to rant about things in games, so here’s one. So, back in 2010 when I picked up Mass Effect 1 + 2, I ended up getting the Digital Deluxe Edition of ME2 because it was essentially free at the time. This promised me all sorts of cool DLC, basically acting like the collector’s edition. Great. Now, here we are in 2012. I like starting sequels when I’m still on the high from the first game, so I figured I’d play some ME2 for a while. I woke up at 4pm after 12 hours of sleep, it’s not like I’m going to bed soon or anything. Steam greets me with a face full of CD keys, […]

I’m atrociously sick right now, which on the one hand means that it’s hard to breathe and it feels like somebody poured radioactive sludge down my throat, but on the other hand means that I suddenly have a lot of hours on hand. Since concentrating on my own suffering and misery turns out to be, well, miserable, I decided on video games instead. Namely, we’re going to talk about Mass Effect, but first, a message from our sponsors: Need to explore alien planets? Trouble with those restless biotics and murderous geth? Need to get to work at your research facility, but need to get past that planetary invasion first? What you need is the Systems Alliance M35 Mako. Its 6 […]
