Gaming Archaeology

So a couple of days ago, Samson wrote a post about excavating old gaming artifacts. And, as I am a gamer of a certain age and also myself, I thought to myself “What does my version of that look like?” Well. Lots of boxes. Less rocks and dragon statues because I didn’t snag many collector’s editions. Sadly missing most of my old floppy games. But still, I put together a list.

Yes, I went to Portland over the weekend and didn’t tell anybody. I’ve got things to say about the experience, which I shall do later. For now, all you Civ fans can go check out Epic 46, and the RomeoRedux SG over on the Civ page. For the Rome: Total War fans in the audience, Marechal and I are working on an SG/story along the lines of Kings of the French, except betterer and gooder and stuff. Expect the first couple of chapters relatively soon.

You say ‘Burninating the countryside, burninating the Romans, etc.’ Adjani laughs uncontrollably. Adjani says ‘I could almost picture you singing that while playing, too.’ You say ‘”And the onager comes in the niiiiiiight!”‘

Well, I finally got RTW screenshots to work. By downloading a third party program to do them with. Bah. But at least I can finally show off some stuff. I talked in my last post about trying out Pharaoh’s gear, and that’s what I’m doing. I’m not sure what I think yet, but then, I haven’t got to see it in action, much. The Seleucids just fell over and died, pretty much, and Egypt has this simply monster econ that isn’t made any worse by taking over the rich Seleucid lands. I don’t seem to be winning a whole lot of the fights I do have, but I haven’t been in many and haven’t quite figured out the tactics yet. […]

Bribing Romans For Fun and Profit
By Dwip October 20, 2004 at 5:11 pm Comments (5) RSS Feed for this post

I’m never ever ever going to bribe a faction army again. Ever. Because, well, the civil war was like this for me: I was rolling up Italy no problem at all. Nobody could stand between Caius Julius Caesar and his legions of awesomeness. Carthage, more of the same. They run up with a full stack army to seige Carthage, I sally out and obliterate them, then repeat. Out east, Dacia/Thracia way, things were rough. Full stack Brutii armies all over creation. All the cities had wooden walls, which meant instant obliteration for me on sallying out. I was getting rampaged on hard out there. I was going to win, but it was going to be a long hard slog uphill […]

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Senate
By Dwip October 19, 2004 at 7:09 pm Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

So I go to bed Sunday night with a major headache and a runny nose, and wake up Monday certifiably sick. On the one hand, I’m sick. On the other hand, it’s a good opportunity to play some RTW. Because you see, the Spanish were being dicks. They’re like my best trade partners the entire game. It’s going great. I’m slaughtering Germans left, right, center, you name it. And then the Spanish decide “Oh ho! We shall seige Numantia for two turns then retreat!” What? “Yeah, you heard us! We’re going to seige Numantia for two turns, then retreat!” Well, ok. “It’s a great plan! You Romans will fear us!” Not really. In fact, let me move up these enormous […]

Well, let’s see. Things happened. And there was stuff, too. We’ll start with the obligatory political debate, finally back at Tonto for the first time in a while. Along those lines, the debate, which as I mentioned to Whir and Regina, went about like this: So Kerry was like “Dude, Bush is a fuckup.” and Bush was like “Uh. Terrorists are bad, mkay?” That having been said, Rome: Total War is awesome. I killed the Gauls, killed Carthage, am currently owning Germany in harsh harsh ways, and am gearing up to take on the Romans in the civil war that’s coming soon. This will be good. Too, Whir and I have been 2 vs 18ing all the BFV maps as […]

Strength And Honor

Wherein many many people are killed, and screenshots are taken. If you haven’t read the post below this, do so now, then come back. So, I’m still fighting a lot of Germans. But first, random screenshots. Here’s Massilia, the biggest city in southern Gaul. It’s currently almost being attacked by barbarians, except I kicked their asses so then it wasn’t. Here’s the site of a great battle between myself and the Gauls back in the day. Yes, it marks these things. Yes, that’s awesome. So anyway, I fought these Germans. Or rather they fought me. There was a first army that attacked, and note those spears there up front, and I beat that with seriously heavy losses amongst the hastati. […]

So I’d love to post some RTW screens for you all, since I just fought a most triumphant battle with the Germans, but since printscreen apparently isn’t doing screenshots these days, that’ll just need to wait. Meanwhile, let’s talk some more about the game I’m currently playing as the Julii. The scene is just outside the walls of Trier, in Germania Superior. The year is 233 BC, and the north is gripped by the icy hand of winter. An army of 500 brave Romans is lined up on a hill overlooking the city, awaiting the sally of some 800 and more Germans. They are led by Marcus the Infantryman (who has other names, too, such as the Brave and the […]

So I’m holding, in my hands, right at this very moment, Rome: Total War. The goodness of this can perhaps be summed up by this Megatokyo strip, and let me say again that there IS a Megatokyo for everything in this life. Now, before I go off to install RTW, let me point out two things. Firstly, the guy on the cover of the game sure is pissed off and screaming about something. Might I suggest that he’s rather displeased at the decision to put a pair of chickens on the visor of his helmet? Just saying. Also, I’m typing this from the laptop, because the big comp is currently generating terrain shadows for my BFV map, which apparently involves […]

I can’t really think of an appropriate song title for today’s entry, so whatever. Suffer. All that you suffer is all that you are, and all that. Anyway. Firstly, an aside to Cole about the whole Novgorod in Early thing. Click here and enjoy. Secondly, having obtained Whir’s copy of Thief: Deadly Shadows while I was there, I have thusly made it work, which essentially means copying the contents of the second and third CDs into a temp dir for installation, because the installer sucks the good suck. But when you make it work, it’s an awesome game. I suck at it, but it’s lots of fun sneaking around and blackjacking people. On a third note, I’m doing prepwork, having […]

So Soak 4 (the band) played in a little tiny bar in Norway last night, except how they went as Manhandler (and to quote the t-shirt, “Marquette’s premier gay band!” Hint: Joke). I was there. And despite their being maybe 8-10 people in the bar at the start, counting the band and the bar staff, it turned out to be cool anyway, as many other people showed up, and I got drunk, and life was good, and then I had a lot of water, and was pretty much undrunk by the time we left the bar. Whereupon, it being 3am or whatever, we went and got food, and that was good too. Tim and the Scotts (Scots? Whatever.) are pretty […]

So I guess I owe everyone an update. So, with the exception of the bit where Whir’s apartment is like 90 degrees with the windows open at night on days when it’s freezing and raining, and the bit where his landlord is rather less than friendly, life in the UP is good times. So good, in fact, that variously in Marquette and Iron Mountain I’ve noticed a few things. Like the minivan Whir pointed out to me that has a staircase on the roof. Honest to god stairs, with a railing and the whole bit. Bizzare. Probably even more bizzare than the lowrider minivan with the spoiler and the flames painted on the front in IM. There’s also the “What […]

An Update
By Dwip August 15, 2003 at 3:11 am Comments Off on An Update RSS Feed for this post

So I needed a break from figuring out the convoluted early history of Elven civilization in Duranth. I hate it when I totally abandon actual historical lessons and have to deal with thousand-year wars. Gah. Anyway. I’ve started playing HRE again. Firebird gave me his writeup, and hopefully Marechal will have that and his own writeup ready to post soon. As for me, I’ve a 17 y/o Emperor with a broke province to deal with. Aeeyah. One of these days we might even play some Tharavel, except for how everybody’s being assholish about giving me characters. So maybe not. Oh well. Until then, there’s MWDA. So I picked up my last week’s Fellowship prize yesterday. A 4-pack of limited edition […]

Well, hrm. Boring, really. Cole came back, so we hung out. That was fun. Hopefully we’ll do that LAN session tonight and play a lot of CFS3. Epic 31 appears to be a smash hit both here and over at RBCiv, where I even made the Quote of the Moment. This is good. Very happy about this. Kings of the French is more or less done, now, but more on that later. The Redoran Mod is…proceeding. Somewhat slowly, since interior decoration takes a while. Quite a while, no less. But we’re now mostly done with interiors now, and it’s on to quest and dialogue scripting. Aeeyah.

Not that anybody but Whir is around to be reading this anyway, but oh well. New page stuff – linked to a bunch of Civ 3 Epics that’ve been around for a while but not linked. Did that in preperation for Epic 31, which I shall go play in a few minutes. Saw The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen today with Mom. Spent the first half of the movie thinking “This movie is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too cheesily bad.” Then about halfway through, I shrugged, realized that it was a fairly enjoyable cheesily bad movie for all of that, and sat back and enjoyed it. Not the height of great cinema, but worth watching on video if you need something. OTOH, all the […]

Hello Out There…

Guess I’m not entertaining y’all enough, hrm? Except Whir, but Whir has no life, so he’s allowed. Not that much has been going on, lately. Job hunting sucks a whole lot. It’s like “job market? You mean Oregon has a JOB MARKET!? You LIE!” But the extracurricular activities go strong. Such as, yknow, the Kings of the French, which I have another reign report to write for, having finished my all of 9 year kingship. Played some more Mechwarrior: Dark Age last night, and sucked the first time, had a close battle the second time, and dominated so hard the third time I cleaned him off the map without losing a unit. That was cool. Did some reading, too. Finished […]

Well, Bloodmoon is now over. Nice enjoyable Morrowind snack. I think I’m about of energy for Morrowind now, but it’s certainly been a good ride. In other news, I finally got done with my latest Kings of the French reign report. Only took like a week to write – all these little bits of fiction take time. Now I need to play out the next guy. Sometimes this is way too much like work, I swear. Speaking of work, it’s out for job hunting tomorrow. Aeeyah.

Or I am, anyway. MW:DA night last night. Mostly clear field, 600 point armies with only 3 orders, so I built what felt like an overgunned 300 point army. All Spirit Cats, 3 mechs, 6 shock troopers, and 3 vehicles, and my brand new Merc Balac VTOL I traded Cole for last time, and my ONLY VTOL. That thing rocks. It got me VC3 twice, as I ran it into the other guy’s end zone and just stayed there. It was going to save me from Cole, except time ran out. Ah well. Anyway, the first game was me dancing around, trying to avoid the other guy’s LE Mad Cat Mk II that was ruling my world, while picking off […]

Yes Whir, here’s a blog update. Let’s see… Not much happening, really. Finished my latest Kings of the French turn finally, after decades of vicious slaughter in the east, and will now need to write up a story for it. RBP-10A finished as well, with us winning by a surprise UN victory. Just finished my Sirian’s Sandbox turn. *shrug* Also, I played some Bloodmoon. I like it. There’s a lot of snow, a lot of Nords, dead and otherwise, a lot of wildlife, most of it now dead, and a lot of nifty quests and items and stuff. About everything one would expect. Good stuff. On the real life front, well, I need a job. I really, really need a […]

Not for the faint of heart, but I found the first part of this to be cool, in a gruesome sort of way. Makes you realize how enormously uncool it was to be an Aztec. For that matter, I’ll just go ahead and plug the whole Bronze Age New World timeline while I’m here. Very nicely done alternate history. So, hrm. What else have I been doing lately. Well, there’s always Civ 3 Succession Games: RBP10 – The Spanish Explorers Sirian’s Sandbox And then there’s the Medieval: Total War SG: The Kings of the French KoF Comment Thread And then there’s all the school. Stalin final tonight, Anth and Greece tomorrow morning. And then it’s all over for the entire […]
