I’m late to this party, I know. As is my custom, I have a few things to say about both games that I didn’t get to in the previous several thousand words on the subject. Yeah, I know. I’ll be sort of brief this time.

Far Cry 3
By Dwip February 26, 2015 at 2:56 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

There is a point a few hours into Far Cry 3 where you as Jason Brody, super frat boy avenger, storm a pirate base singlehandedly to rescue your girlfriend from torture, slavery, and possible death. Having murdered everyone who stands in your way, you are knocked out by a somehow unseen pirate. You wake up in a temple half the island away where you have a nice little chat with the pirate leader before he sets the place on fire and leaves. You, somehow still in the possession of an arsenal to make Arnold take notice, manage to break free, rescue the damsel in distress, and escape in a thrilling car chase as the temple explodes using a grenade launcher […]

Dishonored

Apparently it’s been a year since I’ve done a computer game post. For that you can probably blame Payday 2, which I should also probably blog one of these days, but for the moment let’s talk about Dishonored, another game entirely. You are Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress…I don’t even remember because she dies in the first five minutes of the game but her last name is Kaldwin I think and probable father of her daughter Emily who does not die in the first five minutes. After your sovereign and lover is killed randomly in the first five minutes of the game to unleash a somewhat predictable coup by sinister elements of the government, you must defeat them using […]

I said I was going to talk about XCOM, so I should probably get around to that. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 20 years or so, you’ve probably heard of the original X-COM series from back in the days when MicroProse was cool (and seriously, MicroProse was cool – they’re responsible for some of the best strategy games and flight sims of all time) The original X-COM was infamous for being utterly lethal, punishing to the player, and the best squad-based tactical game of the 90s and maybe any decade. I wouldn’t know, personally, as I was too busy playing Civilization II and Heroes of Might and Magic II at the time, but I […]

Dragon Age 2

Continuing in my trend towards belated reviews of Dragon Age games, let’s talk about Dragon Age 2 a bit. There is, I think it safe to say, no small amount of controversy about this game: Bioware selling out to the EA treadmill? The dumbing down of Dragon Age? I’ve heard it called both these and more besides. And I think both of these are kind of true, as I’ll elaborate on in time. Before answering any of this, I think I should note that I bought my copy for $8 on Amazon. If I had paid $60, I would likely be saying very different things. Now then.

Me: Well, I guess I could, but really I’d just get stuck outside Sleeping Bull so I could listen to that one song over and over again. Ultima VII: You really do like that song. You’ve been doing that for 20 years. Me: Time flies, etc. Anyway, I think I really wanted something Bioware. Dragon Age Origins: You could play me. Me: Well, maybe I could. And then, halfway through Wave 3, my gun runs out of ammo, and ammo boxes won’t fill it back up again. Blow through a couple ammo regen packs, nothing. I have no ammo in my only gun. Speaking of Sanderson, whose books are good and you should read them, his annotations on his book Elantris are very good, and if you’ve read the book, you should read those too. The short of it is that if you showed up for Fallout 3, you pretty much know where this game is going. Only, well, not so much. You remember all those little annoyances you had with Fallout 3? So, if you’ve been around gaming circles in the last age, you may remember that whole Rogert Ebert “video games aren’t art” debate, in which Ebert says games don’t count as an art form, and gamers unite to call him an idiot. And while I generally respect Ebert, I think you can guess which side of that debate I come down on – I don’t think you get to look at almost any given narrative-driven game and believe it’s not art on some level, especially if we accept literature and movies as art forms. All that said, I’m not particularly interested in that line of commentary, and if you want, Shamus Young did it better than me. After the jump, […]

One of the interesting things about Half-Life 2 and its sequels, among a great many things that are interesting about Half-Life 2 and its sequels, is that in Episodes One and Two, Valve added commentary tracks. Return of the Jedi Rabbit

Actually this has little to do with Jedi or rabbits, but the title I wanted was too long. Suffer. The management would like to remind all of you to have a well January, which is definitely one of those “do as I say, not as I do” things, because I slept for like 12 hours earlier, and I’m not so sure I won’t do some more of that. Assuming I can breathe. Anyway. So the title I actually wanted was this quote from last night while Sarah and I were watching Last of the Mohicans: “I am Magua. I am angry. And you have Cheerios.” You maybe had to be there. Also the observation by Sarah that Last of the […]

So Mom’s birthday was the 17th, and she calls me up, and she’s like “Dad got me a 40″ widescreen TV!” “Ooo,” I say. “Will it fit in my luggage when I come home?” So then she calls me last night, and we’re talking, and she says “Oh, you’ll never guess what our new pre-bedtime ritual is now.” “Er, no…” I say, wondering if there’s some goat sacrificing or something I just wasn’t aware of for 25 years. “We’ve been playing Mario!” “Mario. Like, original NES, Mario 1? That Mario?” “Yeah! With the coins, and the plants that eat you!” “That’s too awesome.” I say. Because there’s something highly amusing about my parents hooking up games from my 1980s childhood […]

First Wikipedia, then the world! Also this, just ’cause. And a bit of gaming action, also just ’cause. NWN2 – I thought having to run through a wall of fire to get their guys was cool. It didn’t save them, but. And the extra-special “Yeah, BG2 is still cool.” shot. That’s from the Solaufien mod, and check out how many effect icons Sola has, anyway. That fight was more than just a little out of control, as you might be able to tell. Each of my mages (3) went in there with contigencies, spell triggers, and lesser spell triggers, plus other buff spells. I shot off something like 3 Abu-Dazim’s Horrid Wiltings, 6 Cloudkills, a couple of Teleport Fields, and […]

With a nod to this MT strip. As Sarah was telling me Friday, with a nod to this old MT strip, it’s funny how they were talking about NWN1, and here we are on NWN2. Not to mention the about 6 year progression between a BG2 which hadn’t come out when that strip was made, and NWN2, which is 6 years and 2 engines more advanced. I’m sure that had a point somewhere. Anyway, let’s talk about NWN2. Actually, first, let’s talk about NWN1, with a nod to my old Alsherok review of it. I find it deeply amusing that as it was in 2002, here we are in 2006 with both an Elder Scrolls game and a Neverwinter Nights […]

But I shall describe these things unto you, O readers, and that’s pretty much going to have to hold you for a while, though I will mention that it was hard not to just up and quit today at work, after tasting all that time off. If I wasn’t leaving in 3 weeks anyway, I may have. So, Shadows of Udrentide, here. The first Neverwinter Nights expansion, which I’m pretty much playing because Cole was like “Dude, the NWN xpacks are so cool!” Because to say […]

On the subject of that whole “Know Your Roots” thing, and I have no idea why I’m bringing this up now, but: Yes, I’m about 3 in that picture. And, uh, wow. There’s been carpet on that floor for a long time now. Also: I’m still about 3. And that door is still my desk. And this isn’t exactly about knowing your roots, but it prompted the whole photo album trip: Obviously I was enjoying breakfast. And not that this bears any relation to anything at all, but: They tell me it was pretty good, actually. Also, there are a distressing number of pictures of me in nauseatingly awful 80s clothes. In fact, everyone else is wearing nauseatingly awful 80s […]

First, damn all you people with SC4K. All I have is SC2K. Or, as it calls itself, SC2K4WIN, because, well, back in 1993 there was that whole DOS thing still going on. Also, the 3.25″ floppy. Such as, for instance, the two my copy of SC2K are on. Now. SC2K is awesome for a variety of reasons, but I’ll simply quote you one: AVID CAPITALIST RUNNING DOG LACKEYS – Yemen grunted yesterday that it supports its capitalist running dog lackeys. In their peace-keeping efforts, the capitalist running dog lackeys infiltrated the opposition’s capitol. Their actions, they reported, were the only way they will possibly avert hostilities. Because, well, holy shit. Those of you who remember me talking about the original KOTOR, be it the first or second times I played through, will remember me saying much the same thing, namely that this game is awesome and to sacrifice sleep and friendships for it is a small price to pay to bask in such glory. As I come to the end of Call of Duty, I realize that I’ve been playing an atrocious number of first person shooters lately. I blame this on Battlefield Vietnam, though why I picked it up in the first place is beyond me. Having almost nothing to play but Half-Life while I was overseas didn’t really help me not playing them any, and then the month Whir and I spent blowing the crap out of each other in BFV when I got to MI made me realize that, for whatever reason I didn’t like FPS games before, this attitude was stupid and wrong, because really, sniping pixelized NVA dudes is fun. Pretty much accept that I’ve been doing a bit of reading, a bit of gaming, and a bit of random other stuff, like torturing myself on the hill out front. So, the reading. Omar Bradley’s book isn’t bad. It’s not like you didn’t know all of the stuff he says already, but it’s interesting merely because he’s saying it. By contrast, Hans von Luck was a Wehrmacht officer who, amongst other things, was with Rommel a bunch, which is pretty interesting. He also had the misfortune to get captured by the Russians, where he spent 1945-1950 working in POW camps. Which sucks for him, but is […]

So Act V D2X isn’t all that bad after all – sort of. There are some very long levels, filled with some very hard monsters, and it’s actually pretty challenging. I like it. Except there are these Evil Urns all over the place, right? They pop goodies, but also spawn a boss pack most of the time. As it happens, they pretty much always spawn Hell Lord boss packs. And it’s like this. One Hell Lord, maybe 2, I can handle. Anything above that is insane, simply because they do so much damage I can’t really cope with it. How about how he can shoot you with fire from outside the screen area, so you can’t see it coming and can’t avoid it? Nothing to say, really. Sort of tired, since I was stressed and insomniac last night for no apparent reason. That’s not supposed to happen until LATER in the term, dammit. Too much freaking about the workload, I suppose. My classes are pretty cool, so far. Hellenistic Greece and Stalin are both really cool, even if I have to write like mad to keep up in my notes. It’s worth it though. My Peoples of East Asia class will maybe or maybe not suck. It’s an anth class, which means it probably will, but it’s talking about North Korea, so it might not. Dunno. Historiography will likely be cool, as it’s covering an awful lot of stuff that I’ve been asking […]

Giant Robot Games

So the Monroe gang all got together last night for some serious gaming action. Thinking some LAN action, some Mechwarrior 3 playing, and whatever else. We got the LAN part in, anyway. Hours and hours of serious Mechwarrior 4 playing. Fear Gausszilla. Fear Gausszilla muchly. Actually got the whole LAN working this time, too. Usually it fails, but this time we got it working. So there were some serious 5-way melees going on while Jason was off in the corner working on some obscene MW3 character. We’ll play next time, really. Honest. And as is custom at these things, somebody’s car died at 3am and needed a jump. Jason’s, this time. Currently at the bottom of the hill with a […]

AoM is fun…
By Dwip March 23, 2003 at 2:04 pm Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

Been playing all day, in fact. I’m pretty consistantly beating up hard computers now as Hades, even against another Hades. Sort of figured out how to run very rapid econ expansion in Classical and Heroic, thus enabling me to stomp the opposition 1v1. Still haven’t faced a Zeus or a Poseidon yet, and those are the ones that were steamrolling me before. We’ll see. I still suck by online standards, but oh well. AoM’s a lot different from AoK. Enjoying it so far.

Die, Gargarensis!

Well, AoM has gone down before me. 32 missions long, and even if the build and destroy stuff got to be a bit much at times, it was still quite entertaining. Entertaining enough that it’s the first campaign that I’ve finished since AoE way back in ’97. I ALMOST finished AoK’s French campaign, but then didn’t. That should tell you something, I suppose.

Greeks and Egyptians and Norse, oh my!
By Dwip March 17, 2003 at 6:21 am Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

So I picked up Age of Mythology for Xmas. I had been sort of vaguely looking forward to it, and vaguely antipathic towards it at the same time. Reason being, when I was playing Age of Kings a couple years ago, I played SO much of it, I physically cannot bear to look at the CD anymore. So you know that AoM is probably going to be just about that good. And this is frightening, ’cause, well, I like my life. And really, it’s better than about that good. What’s more, the single player campaign totally blows away the AoK campaigns. The story’s pretty convoluted, and there’s a few too many build and destroy missions, but for the most part […]

ROTD VII: Randomness

This is probably a bit too early and close to the other ones, but hey. It sort of seemed appropriate, given the events of the day. Notably, I have discovered something. If you do 7 straight hours of homework, your mind burns out at some point. Isn’t that an amazing thing? Went from math straight to history, then on to more of the same history, then on to MORE history, then I realized that as cool as it was, I was VERY tired of reading about what dead people did. Then I decided to play BG2. I decided to play BG2 for about 5 hours, with a dinky break in the middle so I could fake dinner. I love this […]

ROTD VI.V: On Computer Gaming
By Dwip September 30, 2000 at 10:21 pm Comments Off on ROTD VI.V: On Computer Gaming RSS Feed for this post

Can you do decimals with Roman numerals? I guess I just did. Whee! While BG2 installs, I figured I’d go for a bit more ranting. Or semi-ranting, or whatever. First off, Oregon State Football. I’m glad that our football team finally doesn’t suck. After not winning a season for like 23+ years, we’re finally getting somewhere. Even for a sports non-fan like me, that’s sort of nice. The downside of this is, of course, that there is NO PARKING SPACE AROUND HERE on game days. Which means I had to drive around the parking lot twice to find something. Compare this to last year, when I was routinely able to find parking fairly close to the dorm with no effort. […]

ROTD VI: Stories From the Tonto Bash Night
By Dwip September 29, 2000 at 10:20 pm Comments Off on ROTD VI: Stories From the Tonto Bash Night RSS Feed for this post

I know you’ve all been eagerly awaiting VI. The alternate title for this is Stories From the Tonto Bash Night. We got war stories, and we got some commentary. Let’s start off with the war stories. And since I’ve played like 6 games or something, I’ll only hit the high points. Lemme see. First game I remember is Czar, Desert, and I (Marechal co-oped with Czar for a bit, then left) against Andy, Sammy, and Stick. Features of this game include me getting my base utterly squashed by Andy’s Mongol scorpion hordes (Ghengis really needed a few of these), me relocating to Czar’s town while Czar/Desert pretty much squashed Stick and Sammy. Andy dropped most of the way through, after […]
