So, as most of you know, back in March 2011 I took a little trip across the country when I moved back to Oregon from Connecticut. As most of you are also aware, this was not a happy event, which is part of why I’ve sat on it for almost four years. The other part, of course, is that before the last redesign this blog wasn’t capable of displaying the pictures like I wanted, but that got fixed like two years ago so what am I waiting for. Somewhat more to the point, however, I took a bunch of pictures on my way back, most of them one handed with no aiming from the dashboard of my car, which I […]

A Brief Note On the Subject of Driver’s Licenses
By Dwip October 31, 2012 at 3:01 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

So my old CT driver’s license was set to expire in about a month, meaning I got the joy of going down to the DMV to get it renewed today. And by “joy” and “DMV” I mean there were more (polite, friendly) people working at the DMV than there were people needing help, as opposed to how it was in CT, where “joy” and “DMV” basically meant “Kind of looked like a prison riot.” So that was nice.

So prior to a day or so ago, I suppose it was possible to convince myself that maybe I wasn’t actually leaving CT. Yeah, I packed all my stuff, gave some things away, but $20 of packing materials and a few boxes isn’t really irreversable. Once you drop $330 at the post office to ship half your stuff, and guys come to start hauling off your dishes and furniture, that starts looking just a touch different. It seems we are doing this thing, for real. And you know, on that note, had a nice chat with the folks at Progressive today, who informed me that the car insurance that was costing me $567 every 6 months in CT is about […]

The Evil Plotting Of Chairs
By Dwip January 16, 2011 at 2:34 pm Comments (12) RSS Feed for this post

So Tuesday night I’m walking down the hall as I do from time to time, when quite suddenly my foot hurts kind of a lot, and I notice that I have unwittingly been attacked by a vicious metal chair that was lurking in the hall. Which is what chairs in halls do, really. After a fair amount of trodding somewhat gingerly and swearing at rather greater length, I went on with my life and didn’t think much of it. The black and blue ring around the middle joint and the discolored area on my upper foot maybe ought to have been a sign, but me and signs were at that time, as we so often are, not on terms of […]

On Driving In Snow

Dear drivers of Hamden, and specifically these people: We have a foot of snow on the ground. The plows never showed. Your front wheel drive car is not the vehicle for this. So stay home and enjoy a day off or something. On another note, I am typing this on my phone. Not a great way to do business, but it works now, so. [edit from the desktop] Well, ok. Maybe it doesn’t work so well. Meh.

There are bears. Really. Originally, our plan for the weekend was pretty grueling: Sleeping Giant State Park on Friday, followed by museums on Saturday and the waterfront parks on Sunday. In thinking about this, we realized our legs had no such stamina, and decided to do Sleeping Giant a week early, which turned out to be wise, as it seems that Large Hills + Legs + No Exercise = Owowow. On the larger blog note, you can expect bloggage for the next while to consist of pretty pictures, since I’ve had…one? weekend in the last month where I haven’t been out and about in New England, enjoying the lack of ridiculous humidity and heat. I assure you that this idea seems much more strange to me than it must to you, given previous utterances on the subject. In any case, back in June Sarah and I drove up to Sleeping Giant State Park, which is one of 3-4 in the immediate New Haven area. Hiked up to the top and generally enjoyed the day. I think the trees more or less speak for themselves, so I’ll just shut up and […]

Rather unlike some other jobs I’ve had, I’m going to miss the whole tech services gig, although I can in some sense look forward to similar work anon, thanks to my hopefully-coming-soon degree, but more on that later. Got a bit of a party thrown for me on Monday, and they gave me a very nice pen and a very nice mug, and I got my picture taken with people, and that was all good. Various people were pretty impressed/enthusiastic about my special project paper (Nancy: “Have you seriously ever thought about teaching/academia? You’d be great at it!”), which was nice. Also, it looks amazing out! Me: There’s that, I suppose. So after a brief trip to UPS, which is a rant in itself, we paused to admire the view on the local streets, and see that picture of North up there, which is, oh, approximately 50 feet from my house, we headed up to West Rock. If you go the speed limit, you will get passed. 2. Passing on the right isn’t just ok, it’s a moral obligation. 3. If the lane you need isn’t marked on the road, just invent one. Right turn lanes, left turn lanes, whatever you need. Don’t worry about people on the other side of the road, intersection, or whatever – they’ll move. 4. Need somewhere to park?
