Of Dresden and Kindles

I haven’t gone all professional librarian reading mode for a while, so maybe we should do a little of that. Spurred on by our pretty awesome Dresden Files RPG games and some copious amounts of encouragement by everyone else who had read the books and watched the show (I haven’t), I figured maybe I should pick up the series and read it. Since a good chunk of them are sitting on Jason’s Kindle, I ended up borrowing that, and I think you see where we’re going with this post.

The Return Of Seen At Book Check-In
By Dwip June 28, 2011 at 9:46 pm Comments (3) RSS Feed for this post

So, part of this whole moving back thing was that I got my old volunteer gig at the Corvallis library back. This is awesome for many reasons, not the least of which is awesome people work there, and new awesome people since last I did. Also, I do juvenile check-in, which means that I come into contact with a very high percentage of books featuring kittens per 2 hour block, and really, with that many kittens how bad can your day possibly get. However, that is not what I wish to share with you today. Instead, I want you to click here. There’s nothing I can possibly add to that, so I won’t. Enjoy.

Quite the Fine
By Dwip April 24, 2010 at 2:01 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

This is a little old, but it amuses my inner librarian. Which isn’t all that inner, but you knew that: Quoth the BBC – Librarians in New York’s oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books: George Washington. The first president of the United States of America borrowed two books from the New York Society Library in 1789 but failed to return them. Adjusted for inflation, he has since racked up $300,000 (£195,000) in fines for being some 220 years late. The New York Society Library says it will not pursue the fine. It would simply like the books back.

So Long, And Thanks For All The Books
By Dwip May 23, 2009 at 3:25 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

So Wednesday, as it happens, was my last day working at Buley. Rather unlike some other jobs I’ve had, I’m going to miss the whole tech services gig, although I can in some sense look forward to similar work anon, thanks to my hopefully-coming-soon degree, but more on that later. Got a bit of a party thrown for me on Monday, and they gave me a very nice pen and a very nice mug, and I got my picture taken with people, and that was all good. Various people were pretty impressed/enthusiastic about my special project paper (Nancy: “Have you seriously ever thought about teaching/academia? You’d be great at it!”), which was nice. It’s one thing to get good grades, […]

In Which Librarians Are Proven To Be Serious About Internets

Which is my reading list for my current assignment. Which I should probably save because I’m sure I’ll want it later.

Know Your Enemy

How do you know cataloging is pain? Notice, if you will, the multitide of 2″ thick books, the 2″ binder that’s full, and yes, that’s so totally a flowchart there. Yes, I AM crazy, why do you ask?

Hax

So, imagine you are sitting at your work computer, peacefully surfing Amazon like you’re getting paid to do. Or at least as peacefully as can be accomplished without the aid of a scroll wheel, which contrary to Samson’s beliefs really is the best computing invention ever. Suppose you see a screen like, say, this one. This is good, right? But then, every second or so, it flashes to this one. Yes, watching it do that all day was pretty much the high point of the day’s humor.

1. Allow me to assure you that getting paid to surf Wikipedia and Amazon for manga and comics AS MY JOB is every bit as awesome as you might think it is. 2. AND I got to do so in my Silent Nut Attack shirt, thanks to Sarah reminding me I OWNED such a thing. Because apparently I forgot about it in my luggage since Christmas break. Keep in mind that it’s one of my favorite shirts. Some days, I don’t even understand myself.

PE 1117
By Dwip September 1, 2007 at 2:30 pm Comments Off on PE 1117 RSS Feed for this post

That being the base call number for readers and perhaps spellers, of which the SCSU rare books collection has quite a great many of, and which I spent a great deal of time this past week putting in some semblance of order. But I get ahead of myself. When last we left off, I was withdrawing various flood damaged books from the system, and stacking them in boxes to be taken away to wherever it is books go when they die. I am thankful to say that that project has finished. In its place, we started work on dealing with the art gallery books (the ones that were in 7 feet of water, as you may recall). As withdrawing all […]

Titular

Wherein I’m going to talk some more about the whole book disposal thing, providing you with pictures and titles I’ve jotted down for your amusement. Yes, dear readers, I did this all for you. Pictures first. As a counterpoint to the Royal Society cover, we also have: Somebody was…irate… Our entire collection, and yes Sarah this is for you, of Phillip Pullman books was gutted by the Flood. I think we maybe still have The Amber Spyglass, and that’s it. I also destroyed our entire collection of Robin Hood books. We now have ONE, which I know because I reshelved it today. The following is in Chinese. There are in fact about ten of these books, which I guess are […]

New Damage
By Dwip June 22, 2007 at 12:33 pm Comments Off on New Damage RSS Feed for this post

With regards to everyone who sent me a link to today’s xkcd, thanks. I laughed. In a kind of evil way, evilly. Because, well, it turns out that, as I have discussed previously, a large part of my job has me acting as what amounts to the curator of a death camp for books. If there are ever war crimes trials for this, I’m probably going down. Because, let us examine: Here’s a typical box of children’s books that comes to me for disposal. I like dealing with these because they’re lighter to move and generally can be disposed of faster. This is a box of oversize books. I don’t like these as much because, while there are less books […]

I Has A Work
By Dwip June 20, 2007 at 7:38 am Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

In that vein of telling everyone about our awesome library jobs, I’ll just go ahead and tell you about mine. Originally, it was supposed to be an internship, which, mostly due to my being lazy, didn’t happen in a timely fashion, which turned into a conversation between my department chair and I along the lines of: Her: So how’s the internship? Me: Well, actually, I’ve been a little slow, and don’t really have one, and… Her: Oh, well, we’ll just line you up with some work downstairs in the library! Come with me! …a short time and 3 floors later… Her: Tech Services people! This is Erik! Hire him! Them: We are powerless to stop your Jedi mind powers. And […]

In Time

And so, to quote the movie, another year passes. How is it with you? Because, having finished Spring semester and going now into Summer, I feel like I should talk a little bit about the past year. But first, let’s give it up for air conditioning, and its presence in my room. Because heat with humidity sucks the suck fantastic. It’s another way in which Oregon is vastly superior to the world – hot? Maybe. Humid? No. The tornado warning (!) last week was interesting, too. Anyway. About this time last year, I was freaking out a lot, trying to figure out if I was getting into SCSU, realizing that otherwise I was going to need to move to Rhode […]

Life Or Gaming Like It
By Dwip February 9, 2007 at 12:48 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

So in the discussion threads for my management class, I spent a fair amount of time talking about my job at CC in relation to how management through fear does not, in fact, keep the peasants in line. Fair enough, I guess. Nice actual job experience. And then, in the thread about participatory management, I wrote quite a bit detailing my experiences as Head Builder for Alsherok, and how to motivate one’s employees to contribute ideas and suchlike. I can tell you right now, when I was 17 and getting my assistant KL gig on Shard, I did not think to myself “Wow, this will totally be valuable management experience later on in life!” For that matter, I didn’t exactly […]

On Reading
By Dwip August 25, 2005 at 2:00 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

I guess I should probably, you know, say something here every so often. Apologies. I started playing Diablo II again, and then I dragged Whir into it, and, well…yeah. You know how it goes. Working at the library Wednesday, as I am wont to do from time to time, I ran into a delimma, and it was this. Working check-in, as I do, it is astonishingly easy to come across books than people have checked in that sound like books that you may like to read. And since you’re right there and all, you can set said book to the side and check it out for yourself. Figure I check in a few hundred books each day, and you perhaps […]

Sort, Sort, Repeat
By Dwip January 12, 2005 at 3:33 pm Comments (8) RSS Feed for this post

Some of you may know that I applied to volunteer at the Corvallis Public Library, like, oh, months ago. Well, it turns out that I got accepted, and so now from 12:30 to 2:30 on Wednesdays I get to go in and do check-in, which is pretty much a lot of book sorting. So I get there, and I feed the meter 2 hours worth of change, go in, and get ushered back and given the tour. There’s like, a whole floor under the library I never knew existed. Got my parking permit, met a bunch of nice people. Then they set me up where I’m going to be working. Got a computer, a bar code scanner, and a whole […]
