May Medialogging

This was a lighter month than I expected it to be, given the aftereffects of the pneumonia, never mind the great deal of personal tragedy I may or may not end up talking about in detail. I also listened to a whole bunch of music after watching It Might Get Loud, but of course I don’t ever do album reviews. Suffice it to say I’m a bit of a Jack White fan now. YTD stats: January: : 5 books; 5 fiction (2,398 p.) / 2 videos; 2 movies (4.8 h.) February: : 11 books; 7 graphic (1,411 p.); 3 fiction (1,079 p.); 1 non-fiction (12.7 h.) / 2 videos; 1 anime series (5.4 h.); 1 movies (2.0 h.) March:: 1 […]

I was going to talk about this being a short month, on account of the entire second half of it being consumed with my epic bout of pneumonia, which I encourage you all dear readers to never contract in any form because it’s awful, but on second thought I did a lot here. Couple of very solid books, some really good visual entertainment, and a bit more outside that. Too, this is an important month in the history of this project. Some big things in here. YTD stats: January: : 5 books; 5 fiction (2,398 p.) / 2 videos; 2 movies (4.8 h.) February: : 11 books; 7 graphic (1,411 p.); 3 fiction (1,079 p.); 1 non-fiction (12.7 h.) / […]

Less books this time around, way more TV and movies. I don’t think it’s manifested itself on this project yet, but I tend to have giant pendulum swings one way or the other. One month I just want to read, one month I just want to watch TV, the next month it’s video games all the time. I’m fickle and capricious that way. Also, I mean, I just blew through like 4 seasons of Stargate here. I gotta switch it up a bit. YTD stats: January: : 5 books; 5 fiction (2,398 p.) / 2 videos; 2 movies (4.8 h.) Another month, more stuff gone through. As these things go, this was a pretty good month. I’m starting to work back through some of the things I haven’t read and watched in a few years, and I think I’ve managed to say some things about some very important stuff in my life in ways I’m happy with. This pleases me. Expect more of this in the coming months. YTD stats: January:: 5 books; 5 fiction (2,398 p.) / 2 videos; 2 movies (4.8 h.) Weirdly enough this is the first time I’ve actually posted one of these for January. Usually I’m on a post-Christmas video gaming binge, but in my post-surgical, plague-ridden state I’ve got a lot of time for reading, so reading I did. Analysts predict this trend to continue. Details for January after the jump.

We are now closing out year two of this little experiment, which I suppose moves it from the realm of experiment into something I’m actually doing for like, real now, especially considering I wrote a whole subset of Highlander posts and wrote real, actual software for it that is now in its second major version. I’m a little surprised by that, and a little surprised at the continued evolution of this blog over the almost twelve years of its existence. But the day has been fun thus far, so I think I shall continue. YTD stats: January: February: March: : 4 books; 4 fiction (1,450 p.) / 3 videos; 1 movies (2.6 h.); 2 TV seasons (15.2 h.) This month, we finish off Highlander once and for all, and make a triumphant return to books. Get used to that – I’ve got another large book series coming down the pike I want to catch up on for this series. More on that next month. A bit short this month, because on the one hand these massive seasons of television take ages to plow through, but on the other because I was kind of busy going outside. Not so many books this month, I’m afraid. Combined with the just completed 22 part series on my Europe trip in 2004, this has been a pretty visual month, though one I have a lot to say about – we’re trying something new this time around, with breakout posts for the two Highlander series. We’ll see how it goes. YTD stats: January: February: March: : 4 books; 4 fiction (1,450 p.) / 3 videos; 1 movies (2.6 h.); 2 TV seasons (15.2 h.) A short month this time. Though I do love the non-fiction, it does have the potential to be extremely slow going at times. I seriously swear to you all that there’s going to be something on this blog every month besides me talking about books, but unless you guys really want to hear about how my health still sucks, my microwave died, my chair snapped in half, and I’m sure I can find something about dogs and trucks and women sung with a bad country accent to describe all that, I got nuthin’. It’s looking more and more like this is going to be me taking a break for most of the year. But we’ll see about that. In any event, I have books to talk about. Good books, that you should read. This one’s coming in a bit late. Blame a week straight of migraines and writer’s block resulting from same. Too, if you’re wondering why there’s been almost zero content here all year, blame the fact that I’ve been sick almost the entire length of same. No, it has not been particularly fun. Spent most of the month with Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and I’m wrapping that reread up. I have a whole massive SM Sterling reread to get through too, but I think I’m going to wait a tad on that, as there are some other things of interest I’d like to read this month. Gonna be a whole lot of fiction this year, I think. Lots and lots of series […]

So, a paradox of sorts. On the one hand, if Google Analytics is to be believed, absolutely nobody is reading these posts except me. Which is a drag but not altogether unexpected. On the other hand, I am fantastically happy writing these posts, as they give me the opportunity to write something on all sorts of books and all sorts of topics. In particular, I’m very happy with the discussion of strategic bombing and air power in my September post, and feel it’s right up there with the best things I’ve done here. And, on a historical note, I’m enjoying the ability to look back on the things I’ve read and the things I had to say about them. It’s […]

September was a surprisingly busy month, as it happens. You’ll notice that I’ve been plowing through a lot of World War II topics the past few months, as it’s been quite a while since I’ve looked at it in any detail. Thus, there are a couple of topics I’m going to blather on that I’ve been meaning to discuss for about 15 years now, and a couple of other things that date back even longer than that. Nostalgia’s fun. In other news, for a program that I’m using to generate blog posts that barely anybody reads, I’m becoming happier and happier with Booklogger, which I gave a fairly major rewrite earlier in the month. It’s really saving me a lot […]

I’m backdating this to August, but we’re a bit late this month, for which you can blame XCOM, about which I will undoubtedly have something more to say later. About this month in reading, well, let us just say that the non-fiction reading goes slower than the fiction reading, and some non-fiction goes slower than other non-fiction. The other thing I did this month especially was wrote a program to generate most of these posts automatically. In an imaginative turn of mind, I called it Booklogger, and I’m confident that it will soon win all sorts of awards for fantastic and beautiful UI design. Actually, I’m kind of proud of this one – treeview controls are kind of a bitch to work with in any way that makes sense, and while there are still a few bits of polish I’d like to put on, I’m fairly happy with how it worked out, […]

So, here’s a project I’ve been thinking about for a while: making a note of every book I read this year. Not something I’ve ever done, and while I’m not reading anything like what I used to, I still read a fair bit more than most, so there’s probably enough going here for a, say, monthly feature. Make a note of a book, say a few words, give an Amazon link or an ISBN or something on the decidedly off chance somebody decides to pick it up. Could be cool, dunno, we’ll see.
