As it turns out, and really who knew, Oregon has a pretty world class air and space museum, the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, all of an hour north of Corvallis. Ever since I got back to Oregon in 2011, I’d really wanted to check the place out, because planes are super cool. Which is why I finally got around to it a month before leaving for the Army. I’d say I was procrastinating, but it’s not like I wasn’t going elsewhere. Anyway, I finally got around to going, and I’m going to show you a small part. Yes, small. I took over 350 pictures. There’s a lot there. Also, warning. There’s like 70 images in this post. I said […]

For people from the future, this was actually written in March 2016 and backdated, because at the time I was way, way too busy to actually post these things. So, as part of the whole “Erik’s joining the Army!” festivities, we decided to have a last group gaming session out at Cole’s place in Redmond. And since my friends know and support my photography habit, it was further decided that we should go up to Tumalo Falls because waterfalls. This…sort of worked.

Chasing Waterfalls

As anybody who has followed these photoblogging posts over the last couple of years knows, I’ve made it a mission to hit as many of Oregon’s various natural areas as I can. This is, as you might imagine, a fairly herculean task considering how much wilderness there is in this state. Nevertheless, a slight dent has been made. Since the beginning, I’ve always wanted to make it to Silver Falls State Park, which is supposed to be one of, if not the, standout of the whole system, featuring no less than ten waterfalls, lush forest, and some pretty serious cliffs. Devin and I got to talking, I mentioned wanting to go, and we decided to make a day of it. […]

The other day I had occasion to go out to Junction City for some things, and since I was out there I decided to see if they had any interesting parks, like you do. What I found was Browns Landing State Park, which in the best traditions of Oregon parks is this random little turnaround at the end of this random road that happens to be next to the Willamette. So, you know me, I took pictures. And since I’m trying to make my camera do more things, I decided to play some with shooting at lower exposure. These pictures have also all been played with a bit in Photoshop CS2 using Auto Levels, another thing I am trying to […]

In which, taking a departure from our usual location-based ramblings, I’m going to talk a bit about trying to hone my craft, such as it is.  All the photographs are from Fort Hoskins up in the Coast range foothills.  I went there two years ago.  You can see some more varied pictures there. In particular, I was interested in two things this trip: A) trying to make clouds work; B) messing around with the white balance settings on my Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS some more. All I changed was white balance – I left it on ISO 100 (previously established as something of a sweet spot with regards to noise in the light I shoot in) and didn’t mess with […]

As most of you are also aware, this was not a happy event, which is part of why I’ve sat on it for almost four years. The other part, of course, is that before the last redesign this blog wasn’t capable of displaying the pictures like I wanted, but that got fixed like two years ago so what am I waiting for. Somewhat more to the point, however, I took a bunch of pictures on my way back, most of them one handed with no aiming from the dashboard of my car, which I […]

This is the latest in a now fairly long line of things I want to show you in Oregon, brought about by the arrival of a loaned camera of a rather newer vintage than my 5 year old Canon. I’ll talk more about that in another post. Alsea Falls is, if not literally down the road from where I grew up, not all that far away. Consequently, I was here many, many times in the 80s and early 90s, but it’s probably been 15 or 20 years since I’ve been back. Dumb, considering how close I lived to it, but there you go.

ISO 80, Daylight, Vivid
By Dwip October 10, 2014 at 7:05 am Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

So, there’s a bit of a thing with my camera (a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS) where the Auto settings don’t quite generate the picture quality you might hope for – lots of noise. So I decided to play with camera settings a bit. Setting ISO to 80 gets rid of most of the noise outdoors, and so that problem solved I decided to play with some more things – what does setting the white balance to Daylight do? How about color balance to Vivid? So I spent most of the day wandering around taking random test shots. Here are some of them. ISO 80 is staying, but Daylight and Vivid get you intro trouble with clouds.

Guess I should. So, in a fit of insanity brought on by my crazy sleep schedule lately, I decided to take a 50 mile trip over the mountains to Newport and the Oregon coast. This has been a while coming – despite our many, many trips to the coast when I was a kid, I think it’s probably been ten years since I’ve been back, and about five since I’ve seen the ocean in any capacity. I just needed the right day to fix that. That was today. Oh man was that today.

I have a set of these from 2009 where I have mid-length hair and no facial hair, and ye gods do they look awful in comparison. That was not a good move by either of the people involved in that decision, let me just say.

At the beginning of this, when I walked up to my parents, I noticed this really old wooden box and a crazy looking green thing under Dad’s chair, and being the curious sort that I am, asked what the devil this strange contraption was. The answer was that it was a set of stereoscope images and a viewer that had belonged to…well, Dad wasn’t sure entirely, but some female relative on his side of the family, he was pretty certain. And, since I was the one in the family interested in all of this random old crap sitting around, would I like it. Yes, yes I would.

Which is why I took a trip to Mary’s Peak last week, when it was still 66 and slightly cloudy. Planning, as you might note, is a skill I possess. That said, it all worked out interestingly, as you shall soon see. For those of you not from around here, Mary’s Peak is a roughly 4,000 foot tall mountain that’s the tallest thing in the vicinity, and is pretty much visible all over the valley. Back in the days when Monroe Elementary School was actually a K-8 institution rather than a middle school, somewhere in the early 90s, somebody came up with the idea of sticking small outdoor fitness courts in schools and parks and such. This was not, I feel, an idea without some level of trouble, since they were uncovered and, get this, it kind of rains a lot in Oregon. Too, the one they gave us sat in a bed of wood chips, which strikes me as the singularly worst workout idea in the history of the world for people who are about to work out and get sweaty, and who are probably wearing low cut shoes. Among other things, it’s one of the most accessible views of Corvallis such as they are, and it happens to be the easiest one to get to from Oregon State so long as you’re willing to walk about 4 miles either way. Having just looked that distance up, I now realize why my vivid memories of hurting for days after that time we hiked up there one night in 1999 are as vivid as they are – that’s pretty far if you’re out of shape. For those among you who knew my schedule, this should look suspicious, and indeed, strange things were afoot at the Circle K, as the saying goes. Let us examine my original flight schedule: 5:57pm Leave New Haven for Philadelphia. 6:59pm Arrive at Philadelphia. 8:20pm Leave Philadelphia for Las Vegas. 10:59pm Arrive at Las Vegas. 11:51pm Leave Las Vegas for Eugene. 2:07am Arrive in Eugene. This looks great and all, right? Only it’s a foul lie. Here’s what really happened: 2:30pm Leave my house. 2:50pm Board the Dixwell bus to ride into New Haven to transfer to the airport bus. 3:05pm Arrive in New Haven. 3:40pm As no […]

Dear CT state DMV. Please either get effecient enough so that tasks that take half an hour don’t take 4, or die. Your attention to this matter is appreciated. To everyone else, since I haven’t bothered to actually tell half of you, I’ll be coming back to OR from the 19th to the 10th of January. I expect there to be general revelry. Some of you have gotten IMs or emails. If I haven’t included you, do let me know about it.

So, that whole trip thing… 8/21 – Monroe, OR to Coeur D’Alene, ID (484 miles) Map Got started at a ludicrously early hour, an hour not seen since…about a month beforehand when I was working. Oi. Our listening for the morning was the BBC Lord of the Rings radio play, which if you haven’t heard it, you need to get your hands on a copy. I’ve read the books, I’ve seen the movies, and the radio version is still my favorite. I’ll spare you the details of the drive up to Portland, because frankly the drive isn’t particularly exciting, and most of you have driven it. I will, however, say that it’s an entirely odd feeling driving through somewhere familiar, […]

Back in those days of yore, say before 1995 or so, we used to get a lot of power outages, at least in proportion to these, well, enlightened days of today, in which we get maybe one a year if that. I in particular remember one outage on a hot evening in what was probably the late 80s, I was reading a book on all the presidents up to the first Bush when the power went out and stayed out. I read that book all evening until I ran out of light at dusk, then continued by candlelight. Pretty good book. I was thinking of that episode last night when, yes, the power went out, disturbing my reading of Bill […]

No, really, I have great excuses for not posting anything lately. Honest. Two very good ones, even. Excuse A: Oblivion got here Tuesday. Which should be enough by itself. Let’s just be clear, here. Oblivion looks better than any other game you’ve ever played, ever. By entire orders of magnitude. That or it makes your computer shoot blue flames, which I assure you was not the case with me. So I did the tutorial dungeon thing, and then stepped out into the world, whereupon I was like “OMFG! OMFG! OMFG!” a lot. Then I was like “Hey Dad, check this out!” and he was like “OMFG! OMFG! OMFG!” a lot too. And then we spent a lot of time making […]

We’re back in RBCiv Epic mode again, and Epic One is up here. Actual site linkage will follow when I get some energy, which may be never, at this rate. There’s not even a lot of presents under there this year. The rest of the living room. You can only sort of see the row of cards along the windows. Note the snowman, which will cackle evilly for about a minute and wish you a happy holiday, without mentioning how it would like to murder you, with an axe. Random porcelain angels. Because I guess people want me to be posting stuff, or something. Well, ok. Let’s see here… 1. Civ IV – this game owns, for all applicable values of owningness. If you take almost everything that was ever good about any Civ game ever, and put it in a game, you wind up with something about like Civ IV. About the only complaints I can possibly make of it is that the wonder movies in Civ II were better, and combat is still vaguely annoying to me, in that they tried to nerf stacks by use of collateral damage, and stacks weren’t particularly broken in the first place. However, if another MP game with Whir comes down to me vs […]

Harking back to the days of yore, let us note a few things. Firstly, when putting down vinyl flooring in one’s bathrooms, remember that less glue is good, 20 years down the line when the time comes to replace the stuff. Because in that choice between spending 10 minutes banging a putty knife between the floor and the vinyl, only to take up a 4″x10″ section, and spending 10 minutes banging on a crowbar, taking up the entire bathroom’s worth of vinyl, well, that’s not really a choice which one to prefer. Though it should be noted that however much fun you thought ripping vinyl up was previously, let me assure you that in reality it is likely somewhat less […]

Wonder what it was… *bumpbumpbumpbumpbump* Oh hell. I’ve got a flat. Doesn’t that just suck. So I pull over, which is no small accomplishment, considering that the shoulder of 99 is just about wide enough to ride a bike on, if you’ve got small tires and don’t mind the 2 foot drop if you slip. Let It Snow

Or let it melt, actually. Bloody snow. Hasn’t snowed here in like, 4 years or something to that effect. A little bit last year, but other than that… Trying to figure out at what point I became hostile to snow, too. I mean, it’s snow. You frolic in it and play and throw it at people. Fun times, right? Well, at some point, D&D became much more important. Don’t ask me how, maybe I grew up (wince) or something, but there it is. As snow prevented me from going to the weekly D&D game yesterday, I am…displeased. I’ll be even more displeased if it prevents me from going out tomorrow, too. *grumble* I might not be going anywhere besides that, […]

I’ve a few other things to say, but they can wait for a while. For the moment, I’ll just wish everyone who reads this a happy Thanksgiving, for those of us what celebrate it. On another note. I don’t usually approve of our president as a general rule, but I think well of him for this. But anyway. Happy Thanksgiving.

Or not so numb. But there was lots of numb. Also, I passed a dead rabbit in the road on my way home. That was slightly disconcerting. Anyway. Been very busy lately. Should be working right now, but I need a break. We’re back to a book per 2 days again, or worse. Right now is worse – 2 books in a day, plus a small paper. Of those, I have the one book done, partway into the second, ignoring the paper because it’s far too easy. Also part of the plan was to complete my essays for going to England, and to get my recommendations to people. Well, no. Books first. But wait, there’s more. This is going to […]

This one’s for Laura, though it’s fairly doubtful she’ll ever know. To explain for the rest of you, I got a call last night, to the effect of “Yeah, Laura’s leaving! The going away party is tonight! Come!” Okie, I’m there. I won’t bore you with the conversation. It wasn’t much, as conversation, though it’s probably some of the best conversation I’ve had with them in quite some time. The point, such as it is, is that life is slowly going by. Five years ago, and the anniversary was about a month ago, I was a very shy, rather frightened college freshman wondering how one went about meeting people in this strange new world. Nothing to it, really. Roomie introduced […]

Yes Whir, I do update every so often. So we, and by we I mean me, Cole/Clyos, and his brother, went up to Corvallis yesterday. Checked out the apartment their going to be getting. Funny place. I can’t quite stand on my toes and touch the ceiling with my head, but it’s close. Plus every room has a distinctly different style – shingle walls, fake brick, wood panels… very amusing. Gas stove from like the 40s. But cheap. And large. Can’t ask for much more. And it’s just them. I predict hanging out over there a bunch. Went to the bookstore, too, which made my wallet $274 lighter after I got my books for school. I am going to be […]

So Laurent, Laura, and I got together for the “Have fun in Europe, Laurent you lucky bastard” farewell tour. Watched Chasing Amy, which means I have now seen every Kevin Smith movie. This is good in one way, bad in another. Kevin Smith needs more movies. At any rate, I’ll say that it’s a good movie, without dwelling on that because I haven’t quite figured it out yet. In any case, it’s a romance and I’m a guy, thus if I like it something must’ve gone right, I imagine. Also spent the time dwelling, as I often times do when I’m tired and have a headache for some reason, as I do now, on the fact where my friends and […]

Well, hrm. Boring, really. Cole came back, so we hung out. That was fun. Hopefully we’ll do that LAN session tonight and play a lot of CFS3. Epic 31 appears to be a smash hit both here and over at RBCiv, where I even made the Quote of the Moment. This is good. Very happy about this. Kings of the French is more or less done, now, but more on that later. The Redoran Mod is…proceeding. Somewhat slowly, since interior decoration takes a while. Quite a while, no less. But we’re now mostly done with interiors now, and it’s on to quest and dialogue scripting. Aeeyah.

You mean Oregon has a JOB MARKET!? You LIE!” But the extracurricular activities go strong. Such as, yknow, the Kings of the French, which I have another reign report to write for, having finished my all of 9 year kingship. Funny how I don’t notice this until Suzanne mentions it the other day, but I’m me, I guess. Best I can make out, this is part of the Vast Christian Conspiricy to Convert the Masses. Nevertheless, people will die because of this, and that saddens me. It saddens me that things have come down to this, but mostly it’s about a hopefully but not likely to be small number of human beings who will die because of a man who made himself their leader.
