As I think everyone reading here knows, my aborted Army career was brief and altogether unspectacular, but as three month stretches of time go basic training left a large impression on me. One of those moments from basic goes like this: We had a Drill Sergeant, a particularly intense and hardcore infantryman like many of the best Drill Sergeants are, who used to read us Medal of Honor citations over the intercom at lights out about once per week. They ran the gamut from MSG Roy Benavidez and 2LT Audie Murphy to some lesser known men. They also included MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart, whose stories are known to anyone who’s seen or read Black Hawk Down. Always, […]

A Series of Tubes and a Motor
By Dwip May 5, 2015 at 9:50 pm Comments (0) RSS Feed for this post

So, about 10 hours ago I decided what the hell, let’s build some Legos, because I mean why the hell not, right? I decided that the thing to build was set 8868, the Air Tech Claw Rig, which was the biggest, baddest Technic set back when I got it in 1993 or so. This thing is a beast. It’s fully a foot and a half long, features an electric motor driving an air compressor, a complex system of pneumatic tubing that drives the claw rig, a fully functional drivetrain, and an engine with working pistons. It’s pretty super rad.

Had an interview today. Think it went well. I don’t get to wear my suit very often, so hey, why not take a picture? And a couple three things about that: 1. No, I don’t take pictures well at all, do I? 2. It’s kind of hard to take decent self shots though. And this apartment has terribad lighting. 2. I have a set of these from 2009 where I have mid-length hair and no facial hair, and ye gods do they look awful in comparison. That was not a good move by either of the people involved in that decision, let me just say.

So I had a brief experience with gaming technology somewhat earlier. Me: I’m incredibly bored and apparently want to play an RPG. I kind of want to play Baldur’s Gate, but that seems silly because I’ll be doing that soon enough. Ultima VII: You could play me. Me: Well, I guess I could, but really I’d just get stuck outside Sleeping Bull so I could listen to that one song over and over again. Ultima VII: You really do like that song. You’ve been doing that for 20 years. Me: Time flies, etc. Anyway, I think I really wanted something Bioware. Dragon Age Origins: You could play me. Me: Well, maybe I could. And I added you to Steam, so… […]

It’s somewhat astonishing that I’ve never got around to mentioning this before now, considering the blog title, but: Somewhat randomly via this, I’m pretty amused that this Wikipedia page is a thing that exists. Money quote: The animal was clearly in distress, or perhaps berserk. The President confessed to having had limited experience with enraged rabbits. He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat. The See Also section is pretty great too.

One final post on the subject of Legos, and then I’ll get back to actual gaming. So, rather some years ago, my parents erected an aboveground pool for me, my younger self having grown fins and gills at the time. However, Oregon weather being what it is, combined with the pool being on the not sunny but very bushy side of the house meant that the pool didn’t get a lot of use, so it got taken out. What this left, however, was a 10 foot by 10 foot or so sandbox filled with something akin to river bottom sediment. So I’m a kid, I’ve got a sandbox, and I’ve got a ton of Legos. I think you see how […]

You end up needing to do something like this: If txtStrength.Text “” Then iStrength = Int(txtStrength.Text) Else iStrength = 0 End If Which, when you total it all up is several hundred lines of code, and takes for damned ever to write. However, if you have the intelligence of your average first year programmer, which is to say people who have been doing […]

Of this latest batch, let’s say 4/5 of them arrived in some kind of damaged state, ranging from holes in the cardboard to complete retaping and plastic bands around the box. One problem: iTunes only has the last few episodes, of thirty-some. So, if you’ve been around gaming circles in the last age, you may remember that whole Rogert Ebert “video games aren’t art” debate, in which Ebert says games don’t count as an art form, and gamers unite to call him an idiot. And while I generally respect Ebert, I think you can guess which side of that debate I come down on – I don’t think you get to look at almost any given narrative-driven game and believe it’s not art on some level, especially if we accept literature and movies as art forms. All that said, I’m not particularly interested in that line of commentary, and if you want, Shamus Young did it better than me. After the jump, […]

The one I HAVE started involves tech services work in the SCSU library, which is wildly interesting thus far, but I’m only on Day 3 as of about an hour from now. Deer Materialism
By Dwip March 17, 2007 at 11:26 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

Seen in my public libraries textbook: “Most society members have been led to believe that life in society is a competetive struggle for existance and that material progress can be realized through technological and economic growth. Students of society, however, have identified a gradual paradagim shift away from these positions and a spreading pessimism. The futurist Alvin Toffler, for instance, contends that there is an assumption that moral, aesthetic, political, and environmental degredation will overwhelm society no matter the material or technological progress it enjoys.” Yeah, and you know what? When money is evil, we’re gonna cavort with some fucking deer while our robot slaves grow us free food. Yes, Halor conversation of old, we love you too.

A few ponderances upon the events of yesterday: – As Sarah was saying to me in the line for Little Shop of Horrors, Soviets make everything funnier. Which is why I have a mix CD here emblazoned with “In Soviet Russia, CD Plays You!” – Little Shop of Horrors was surprisingly unbad. In spite of my passionate hatred of musicals, which are the spawn of Satan and must be destroyed, I actually unwound enough to enjoy the thing. Ph34r teh plant ones. (I should now make Sarah watch Day of the Triffids. Except the movie totally sucked, so) – We watched a lot of Full Metal Panic. Among other observations was this classic when Gauron showed up in his silver […]

Just because I did this tonight and I think I’ve worked it out, let’s talk about food and the cooking thereof. 1. For pepper steak marinade, you need about a packet and a half or maybe two packets of marinade. Two is probably enough to cover the steaks properly. Probably need about 2/3 of the vinegar they recommend – tonight’s came out pretty vinegary, though good. 2. Shaw’s thin steaks are definitely not as awesome as Safeway’s. 3. Broiling is totally the pro move on my oven. Unfortunately my oven sucks. I miss electric. Now, on the supposition that you were going to fry some potatoes to go along with these steaks, no problem. If you start frying them about […]

Actually this has little to do with Jedi or rabbits, but the title I wanted was too long. Suffer. The management would like to remind all of you to have a well January, which is definitely one of those “do as I say, not as I do” things, because I slept for like 12 hours earlier, and I’m not so sure I won’t do some more of that. Assuming I can breathe. Anyway. So the title I actually wanted was this quote from last night while Sarah and I were watching Last of the Mohicans: “I am Magua. I am angry. So, here we are. The world supply of 2006 is rapidly running out, and soon we’ll be entering that brave new world of 2007. Part of me still thinks it’s going to be 1997 soon, but we’ll just supress that part, because honestly, who wants to listen to all that awful music again? No? Didn’t think so. Anyway. It’s been quite a year. Much accomplished, much changed. Gained a job, lost a job. Moved across the country. Got an apartment on my own. Went to school. Met some pretty cool people. Left some behind, too. If I have not quite triumphed over everything I set out to, I’ve come pretty close. All in all, it’s been a pretty good year. […]

I in particular remember one outage on a hot evening in what was probably the late 80s, I was reading a book on all the presidents up to the first Bush when the power went out and stayed out. I read that book all evening until I ran out of light at dusk, then continued by candlelight. Pretty good book. I don’t think I remember when either one is coming out, either, but I should probably fix that. I DO think that having radio stations that play Lake of Fire are good, but to return to Audioslave, I wish they’d play something besides Like A Stone, because honestly, there’s about 10 other tracks on that album that are better. By Dwip December 7, 2004 at 6:35 am Comments (4) RSS Feed for this post

Just because every so often we need to have flashbacks to the days of yore O these many months ago when I complained about lack of sleep… Let’s all be aware that the whole 10pm-1am 7am-10am sleep pattern thing just doesn’t work out well for the participants. Nor does the 11pm-2am one. Probably looking at another 7-10, too, which is going to quite frankly suck the good suck in sucktastic ways of suckfulness. And for some reason I keep listening to Until the End of the World and the Byrds’ version of Mr. Tambourine Man over and over and over. And the combo of the two is a bit strange, you might say. And most of you know that I […]

Strip title courtesy, as always, of Megatokyo. So the moral for today is to remember a simple lesson. No matter how good of an idea it may seem at the time, accidentally biting yourself in the lip, leaving a nice open wound, is not a good idea. The reasoning behind this is simple: Dinner that is this well prepared and tastes this good should not bring this much agony. [edit] I put salt on the corn. Good move there, self. [/edit]

Good Times Bad Times

We have, on the one hand, a particularly annoying start to the day, wherein I not only sleep for 10 hours randomly, thus screwing my early start to the day where I was going to do last night’s work I didn’t do last night because I was exhausted, I then get in a fight with Dad about said work. We also have, on the other hand, my randomly recieving a $109.65 check for being wise enough to buy XP from Microsoft and then them getting sued for some random thing, resulting in my essentially getting a free copy of XP. Along with this, I walk in the house, and the whole thing smells like cooking turkey. So I’m getting what […]

Fucking comment spammers. I just spent the better part of four hours deleting about 800 comments stretching all the way back to the very beginning of this blog and banning about 40 IPs. A bit less than fun. The side effect from that is that nobody can reply to old posts now. Not that people really did, but there are a few gems in there. The best part of this is, they weren’t even GOOD spammers. I mean, “gopher exploit?” Gopher is like, so 1991. Or “reality porn videos.” Reality porn? As opposed to what? Blow up doll porn? Stick figures? Whatever. The BFV 1.1 patch is out, and that’s good, except how it’s not in various points.

Yeah. So apparently this whole 6/6/6/6 sleep schedule thing is giving me some pretty screwed up dreams. I mean, they’re not quite this odd, but. Then again, maybe they are. I mean, the one where I get attacked by ninjas in my house and have to go all Kill Bill on them with a sword, that’s not TOO odd, right? I mean, we all get attacked by ninjas in our sleep from time to time. These things happen. The one where I’m reliving the last little bit of KOTOR, slaughtering dozens of evildoers with the Force, well, that’s a little bit odd, since I don’t normally dream myself into video games, but hey, whatever works. The last one, though… THAT […]

So, in a stunning display of brilliance, after reminding myself ALL WEEK about this stuff, I drive home, remembering to pick up Office 2k, CC2, and Fight Club. I did, however, forget the ethernet cables, without which my laptop is essentially crippled, as well as my original DD2 disks and my Office 95 CD, which means no installs for Dwip tonight. Considering I’m dying to work on a few things IN WORD, that’s sort of a problem. *snarl* Also, I have been thwarted by rd_parse once again, but I’ve been being thwarted by rd_parse for like 4 years now, so no big deal.

In the spirit of updates and such, I suppose I should offer one up, even though most of my attention blogwise is concentrated on that raging history thread down there. That having been said: Lots of school. I have more reading than I care to think about, more work coming than I care to contemplate. This is, however, the last of it for a time. In case I haven’t made this entirely clear, it does appear as if I will be going to England in the spring. So if I make it through this term, I’m free and clear. This is good. My creative urges are running rampant lately. I’ve done some more work for Alsherok, and even gotten further […]

Just like the ones I used to know. Actually, feeling a lot better. I can (mostly) breathe, my throat merely twinges instead of re-enacting the great battles of World War II, and, well, it’s Christmas. That having been said, Merry Christmas, O Blog Readers. It’s good to have ya all. A few specific ponderances before I go join in the revelry: Raine sent me a card all the way from Singapore. Very cool. In fact, the vastly-greater-than-normal amount of Christmas cheer flowing my way this year is very gratifying. Apologies if I’ve been a bit lax in my own giving this year. Dad got the entire Shogun miniseries on DVD for Xmas. I am profoundly jealous. So profoundly jealous, in […]

All of that stuff occured, mind you, but I wasn’t there. So where was I? About the time D&D was going on, I think I was napping, or trying to. Or maybe that’s when I was throwing up. Can’t remember. I slept through most of RotK though. Or at least I slept as much as you can when you can’t really breathe. Being sick sucks, let me tell you. The worst of it, […]

For the plus side of today, we have: The capture of Saddam Hussein. While it may or may not translate into a real reduction in the number of guerillas in Iraq, the symbolic victory is enormous. This is good. My playing of Epic 37, which is one of the coolest games I’ve ever played. You will hear more about this when the game ends on the 22nd and I can actually talk about it. My birthday, which was muchly fun, and good times, even if I do suck really bad at Godzilla. My acquisition of Civ 3: Conquests. Yay. On the downside of today, we have: The lack of a patch for C3C means there are still game-crippling bugs. My […]

When I orginally applied for college, I wanted to be an architect. I focused on going to the University of Oregon, because it was the only place in state to get that degree. The observant reader will note that I go to Oregon State University these days – in fact I never went to U of O for more than the abysmal summer term where I destroyed my life with Latin. So what changed? Two things – I can’t draw, and I hate Eugene. So at the comparative last minute, I switched and went to OSU as a business major. See, the art one’s important – you need mad art skillz to be an architect, and I haven’t got them. […]

These are always kinda pointless and fun. Pegged me reasonably well, even. Your Brain Usage Profile Auditory : 43% Visual : 56% Left : 43% Right : 56% Erik, you possess an interesting balance of hemispheric and sensory characteristics, with a slight right-brain dominance and a slight preference for visual processing. Since neither of these is completely centered, you lack the indecision and second-guessing associated with other patterns. You have a distinct preference for creativity and intuition with seemingly sufficient verbal skills to be able to translate in any meaningful way to yourself and others. You tend to see things in “wholes” without surrendering the ability to attend to details. You can give them sufficient notice to be able to […]

So I was thinking as I was going to get pop about creative urges, and in specific my own. And I think to myself no, it’s worse than that. It’s not just an urge, it’s more like a physical NEED. I MUST create things, be they in writing, drawings, whatever. Sort of the manifestations of the things I read, the games I play, if you will. Thus I create D&D worlds, or Morrowind mods. The dangerous thing about books, and I mean the good ones here, the really good ones, is that they make you think. Worse than that, they make you FEEL. End of a really good book, you sort of put it down, and you get kind of sad, and you kinda dwell on it a bit, dwell on yourself, that sort of thing. And then you go to bed, and you wake up, and nothing’s changed in your life, and it’s all back to the same old thing. Yeah. Guess who’s been reading way too much today? The worst part of it is, it left me with a realization that I am very very tired of my life at the moment. […]

Funny how I don’t notice this until Suzanne mentions it the other day, but I’m me, I guess. Best I can make out, this is part of the Vast Christian Conspiricy to Convert the Masses. Sort of a random thought I’ve been wondering about for a couple days. Seems like when you see US forces on TV, they’ve got this weird mishmash of woodland pattern camo and desert pattern camo going on. The Brits you see have all pretty uniformly got some nifty-looking desert camo, but the US doesn’t seem to have it in gear or something. Given that lack of such was a problem back in Gulf War I, slightly curious as to why there seem to be more guys in woodland than in desert in this one. *shrug*

Reading this rant might just change your life forever. Or… not. I’m talking, of course, about dogs, and dogs that own people. You have seen them. You have probably been annoyed by them, just as I was 2 days ago. It started innocently, with me taking the trash out. I got almost to the end of the driveway, when I notice in the neighbors yard, running as fast as it’s short little stumpy legs would carry it, a small dog. Tired of being uncomfortable, and needing more furniture for my room, I went for a drive home (didn’t hurt that today was a nice day). Whereupon I got involved with looking at old family pictures with Mom. This was, of course, very entertaining (I thought so, at any rate).
