…totally about to carrot murder some fools. This is all by way of mentioning that Mom and I went through a few piles of random stuff she kept from my grade school years. Where “A few piles” actually means “kind of a lot of piles” and “stuff she kept” means “every single assignment I ever did, except for the ones that died, unlamented, in my high school locker.” Seriously, whole boxes of this stuff, including that rarest of things: actual assignments done during my 6th grade year. Many was the time where I was heard to exclaim “When did that even happen? That existed?” Also, how many trees died in the vain attempt to teach me managable cursive, cursive I […]

Our Long National Nightmare Continues To Be Over

So, as further regards that whole “I guess I’m finally done with school and they gave me a degree” thing, Sarah gave me as my graduation present that medal in the picture up there, which I am reliably informed is a Croix de guerre from World War II. “After all that, you deserve a medal,” she says to me, and I suppose I have to agree.

I don’t really want to spend a lot of time dwelling on this, because God knows we’ve dwelled on it enough over the past few years, but per a conversation I had with the nice man at SCSU this afternoon, I wish to draw your attention to the following: He tells me the actual diploma will be mailed sometime around the end of July. It’s over, I’m done.

Once More On Paper Writing

As of about 5 minutes ago, I just sent off what amounts to my Master’s thesis to get graded. While I am fairly confident that I did good work, and that what I did actually amounts to interesting and original research which may one day actually mean something, ohshitohshitohshitfuckfuckfuckIreallyhopethisworks. Ultimately, the whole thing is 55 pages doublespaced, 12,035 words worth of highly complex technical jargon about MUDs, libraries, metadata, and everything in between. Before taking on this project, I do not believe I was previously aware that you could pack so much meaning into sentences. I’d quote some for you but my brain would explode. For the record, a little bit of context. My final paper for HST 407, the […]

A Brief Paper-Writing Note

Currently writing the last bit of my special project paper. Can I hit 10,000 words? Probably. We will discuss this later. For the moment, however, I am doing data analysis while listening to the stirring and dramatic Last of the Mohicans soundtrack, which you should own. Specifically to Promontory, which is the music from the climactic scenes. Never before, in the history of life, has talking about metadata ever been so epic. Can metadata defeat Magua? The world wonders.

Well, except for how it allows me to dig up some really entertaining, yet offensive quotes from 1860 Northern newspapers, whereupon everyone uses assorted racial slurs and such. Or, you know, there’s always entertaining stuff like this: “If the condition of the negro slaves of the South and the free negroes of the North be contrasted, we find no difficulty in determining where the comfort, happiness, and well being of the race are best preserved. In the South, as everybody is aware, the wants of the negro from infancy to death are supplied…the duty of this care by the master is not only a moral but a legal obligations, […]

Sorry if nobody but Whir and I had a clue what I was talking about last entry. I don’t usually get to revel in my CC2 geekdom much, however. Anyway. 7 more pages of the paper due on Tuesday. That’s going to suck, but I’m a lot more prepared now than I was. It’s still going to mean a lot of pain tomorrow, but I survived Wednesday, I can survive tomorrow. Well, I sort of survived, at any rate. I went a little loopy there at the end, as the following email will show you: (It is, I note, my tradition to send out weekly “It is now the weekend. For something COMPLETELY different. The HST 407 paper-writing theme song. When Johnny comes marching home again, Hurrah! Hurrah! We’ll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah! The men will cheer, the boys will shout, The ladies they will all turn out, And we’ll all feel gay When Johnny comes marching home. The old church bells will peal with joy, Hurrah! Hurrah! To welcome home our darling boy, Hurrah! Hurrah! The village lads and lassies say With roses they will strew the way, And we’ll all feel gay Whn Johnny comes marching home. Get ready for the Jubilee, Hurrah! Hurrah! We’ll give the hero three times three, Hurrah! Hurrah! The laurel wreath is ready now To place upon his loyal […]

So the news of the day is that my paper topic for HST 407 got shot down on Thursday, and I have until about Monday to come up with a new one. So I’m digging through various things online, such as the Congressional Globe for July 4, 1861. The Senate’s proceedings therein take like 2-3 pages, and are on the order of “Right then. Here’s some messages from the President and the cabinet secretaries. We all done, then? Excellent.” The House of Representatives is slightly more chaotic. It’s on the order of: Clerk: Ok. Down to business. Roll call. Guy 1: I object. Flunky over here wasn’t properly elected. He went and got elected in Virginia, then voted in Ohio […]

On another note, today, in the “I’ve been awake since like 11 am on what was technically yesterday” sense of the term, sucked. This has been one of those terms where I’m not even remotely prepared for anything at all, despite the desperate longing to be so prepared, and despite vague motions to actually attempt something approximating real preparedness. On occasion, you get your face rubbed in your lack of preparedness, and today was That Day. I should start by noting I had like 6 hours of sleep. Write out a paper proposal, with 2 seperate topics, for the Lincoln class. Read an unspecified number of pages for 19th Century Europe and write an impression on the work. There’s other work to be done in other classes, but it is negligable and can be safely ignored until, say, tomorrow. That having been said, a note on Donald’s book. It rules. The man who was finished one of his papers is king. Or something. The important thing here is that I finished my Magruder textbook paper. I’m sort of proud of it, except where I’m not. I’m not sure how well it passes on the essence of the whole thing in 5 pages, but whatever. It will all make sense in the end. Now I get to write one on Soviet prison camps in the 1930s. That’ll be exciting. Also, I offer up a website, and a quote. The website And the quote, in reference to the book that’s based on the website, or something. “It also doesn’t really end, so much as it jerks abruptly to a halt like an […]

The hangover part of the week: Thursday: Conference on the paper that’s due in two weeks. I need to have a bibliography and maybe an outline together by then. Also a group meeting for my presentation next Thursday. Friday: This’ll be fun. 5-6 page Archives research paper due in HST 310. 5 page paper on the gulags due in HST 415. 10 page paper on Xenophon’s Anabasis due in HST 421. I urge you all to remember that while I’ve done most of my archives research, I have yet to touch the books for either of the other two papers. Next Tuesday: 3 articles with reports due for Anth. Next Thursday: Archives research presentation due in HST 310. 2 Mondays […]

In the eeeeeeeevning… *loud drums/guitar* Or something. So on the plus side of this last week, Wednesday I played some great MW:DA. Thursday I saw Matrix: Reloaded (can’t find my copy of the original – how annoying). Friday I went out with Tali and Laura, had ice cream, played cards, enjoyed the weather. Saturday I went out with Tali and Laura, threw a frisbee around for a while, enjoyed the weather, ate some good pizza, and watched a really bad 60’s horror flick. Good times. And today I got fed. Yay.

Oh So Tired
By Dwip May 26, 2003 at 2:51 am Comments Off on Oh So Tired RSS Feed for this post

The dangerous thing about books, and I mean the good ones here, the really good ones, is that they make you think. Worse than that, they make you FEEL. End of a really good book, you sort of put it down, and you get kind of sad, and you kinda dwell on it a bit, dwell on yourself, that sort of thing. And then you go to bed, and you wake up, and nothing’s changed in your life, and it’s all back to the same old thing. Yeah. Guess who’s been reading way too much today? The worst part of it is, it left me with a realization that I am very very tired of my life at the moment. […]

Let’s see. Whir wants a blog update. What’s been happening. Still going out of my mind doing papers and shit for classes. STILL haven’t taken my Greece midterm ’cause the prof’s been out for some reason. Did my “redesign the history board” project this morning and turned it in. Will do my second archives visit tomorrow, then write the paper. Then somehow I will get together four books on one of: Diocletian, Constantine, the entire Fall of the Roman Empire, or something wildly out there. THEN I will read Xenophon’s Anabasis and write THAT paper. THEN I will write the paper on the Diocletian thing. I think I forgot a paper or test or something in there. Whatever. I just […]

So about a week ago, I’m poking around over at RBCiv, and I notice a random non-there link. So I whip out ye olde email proggy, fire off an email to Griselda over there. Yeah, you’re sort of missing a link, and oh by the way I changed my website addy, so a bunch of my links are broken. Next thing I know, I get one back to the effect of “Say, noticed you live in Corvallis. Well, so do I. We should get together sometime.” It’s a six inch world, some days. So to make a long story short, we do on Tuesday, and there’s much talking about Civ, D&D, school, you name it. Good times. What’s more, I […]

Well, that’s that. A not-quite-3-page summary of an article entitled Soviet Perceptions of U.S. “Positions-of-Strength” Diplomacy in the 1970s. 25 pages. Serious stuff, though sort of…dated at 1979. At any rate, it was a sort of hard assignment, but not as hard as she made it out to be. OTOH, I haven’t got a grade on it yet… It seems, though, that if one reads with an eye to the main points, it’s not all that difficult. Could just be me. At any rate, it’s 4:30 in the morning, and I’m starting to lose the effects of the massive caffiene ingestion. I may sleep yet. All I know is, if I never see the interior of MS Word again, it’ll […]

So on a whim I was up last night until like 2am reading Civ 3 SG reports. So now I’m exceedingly tired today, and I have to read 30 pages and write a precis summary of it ’cause it’s due tomorrow. Had two midterms Monday/Tuesday, ruled over them. Got my paper back from Friday, turns out I wrote on the wrong topic, didn’t do it in the exact style he wanted, and he gave me a B- anyway. Rule. And MS Combat Flight Sim 3 is fun, even if I suck at it harshly. Then, I haven’t played a flight sim since, oh, F-15 Strike Eagle III in like, 1993. So it’s 10:49 here, and I just got back from getting myself some more Cherry Coke to keep running. I shouldn’t drink it, but I know I will, and I’ll keep gorging myself on brownies, despite feeling both way too full and way too sick. Food is…useful though. Killing myself like this is all part of the paper-writing process. Measly little 5 pager on Stalin. I can write it all on my head, but not on paper, but I need to do it, ’cause it’s due tomorrow. Four years of undergraduate academic papers has yet to teach me how to not stress out over even the smallest paper, sort of like how it has yet to beat out of me […]

And life was good. Went out with Tali and Laura, watched Spaceballs, ate some kickass pizza, and played with the cat. Cats rule. I wish I had a cat. And now there shall be some serious Diablo II playing. Those of you waiting for updates, well, the week is exhausting. Why? Schoolwork. Exhaustion. The usual reasons. The week for me involved going to class, coming home, mindlessly websurfing, and then doing homework until bedtime. And that looks to be the way of my term. It will suck. But there’s always the weekend.

Nothing to say, really. Sort of tired, since I was stressed and insomniac last night for no apparent reason. That’s not supposed to happen until LATER in the term, dammit. Too much freaking about the workload, I suppose. My classes are pretty cool, so far. Hellenistic Greece and Stalin are both really cool, even if I have to write like mad to keep up in my notes. It’s worth it though. My Peoples of East Asia class will maybe or maybe not suck. It’s an anth class, which means it probably will, but it’s talking about North Korea, so it might not. Dunno. Historiography will likely be cool, as it’s covering an awful lot of stuff that I’ve been asking […]

I should have registered for classes last Friday. Which is the root of all of this. Turns out they changed it so you hafta see your advisor first, and have THEM get it. Except my advisor isn’t in until today, so I’ll hafta register late. Well, that sucks, but I can deal with it. ROTD XI: Ain’t It the Life
By Dwip October 17, 2000 at 10:30 pm Comments Off on ROTD XI: Ain’t It the Life RSS Feed for this post

It was time for another one, I figured. Let me start by saying that I hate being tired. I’m really, well, tired of it. Possibly because of the fact that over the summer I got into the habit of sleeping during the day and staying up all night. Which my parents absolutely hated, thus forcing me to try and change it around. All summer. Bleh. Here, of course, it’s because of my IDIOT HEATER that starts going crashrattlebangsmashclangpingpingping at odd times during the night, thus forcing me to wake up for half an hour at a time each time. Raarg. Compounding the problem is the fact that I live on the 5th floor of Callahan Hall. The elevator sucks, so […]

RoTD X, I suppose. Am I up to 10 already? Eek. You know it’s Monday when… 1. Due to insomnia, you get to sleep at around 4:30am, and you have to be up at 9:20am to go to class. 2. The phone you borrowed because yours sucks gets a low battery warning and starts beeping once a minute, and because you’ve never had it happen before, you spend 15 minutes looking for the thing and plugging it in, ending the problem. This causes the loss of another hour of sleep. 3. Soon after, random loud people in cars start driving around, which you can hear even though the window is shut. Looking at the clock, it’s 2 hours before you […]

ROTD VII: Randomness

This is probably a bit too early and close to the other ones, but hey. It sort of seemed appropriate, given the events of the day. Notably, I have discovered something. If you do 7 straight hours of homework, your mind burns out at some point. Isn’t that an amazing thing? Went from math straight to history, then on to more of the same history, then on to MORE history, then I realized that as cool as it was, I was VERY tired of reading about what dead people did. Then I decided to play BG2. I decided to play BG2 for about 5 hours, with a dinky break in the middle so I could fake dinner. I love this […]

Can you do decimals with Roman numerals? I guess I just did. Whee! While BG2 installs, I figured I’d go for a bit more ranting. Or semi-ranting, or whatever. First off, Oregon State Football. I’m glad that our football team finally doesn’t suck. After not winning a season for like 23+ years, we’re finally getting somewhere. Even for a sports non-fan like me, that’s sort of nice. The downside of this is, of course, that there is NO PARKING SPACE AROUND HERE on game days. Which means I had to drive around the parking lot twice to find something. Compare this to last year, when I was routinely able to find parking fairly close to the dorm with no effort. […]

Oh dear, am I up to five already? That’s bad. I should probably cut back. But, since it’s 12:30 in the morning, I’m totally bored, and I really should go to sleep because I have 2 hours of utterly boring econ lecture tomorrow morning, I’ve decided to grace you all with another rant. Today’s subject? Dorm life. There’s some good stuff about it, definitely. There’s tons of people, so it’s (sort of) easy to meet people, and I’m all of five flights of stairs and 50 feet of walking between me and all sorts of unhealthy food like pizza, burgers, and pasta. I also live in a single room this year, so I’ve got lots of space and no roommate […]

As various of you may or may not know, I moved into the dorms at Oregon State 3 days ago. Seemed like a good topic for a rant, especially since I haven’t been here for 3 days (this gets better). Moving in was surpsingly easy. I was the first person in the checkout line, and it was vastly simple to get all the cards and things, which it most certainly wasn’t last year. Moving myself in was semi-easy. One of these days Callahan Hall is going to get 2 elevators, and then watch out world… Only problem: Some beat up the little panel that tells you what floor you’re on last year, and nobody bothered to replace it. They painted […]
