Adventures in 3D Printing
By Dwip January 1, 2016 at 8:46 pm Comments (2) RSS Feed for this post

So, one of the things Dad got for Christmas was a 3D printer. And in the process of figuring out what to do with it, it occurred to us that Blender could make the files that this printer needs to print stuff. If only there were somebody around with a copy of Blender and a stash of files to use. Oh wait. So first we said “Hey, can it do a sword from Oblivion?” Well, sure it can. It’s right up there. That’s sort of neat, but we should think bigger. So we did.

As Pertains to Voice Chat
By Dwip September 6, 2013 at 12:15 am Comments (1) RSS Feed for this post

So, for the last while the accepted way we do voice chat in Mass Effect 3 is actually to run a group voice chat in Steam, because ME3’s push to talk chat is fairly annoying to use in the middle of intense firefights while you’re trying to use seige pulse on that damned Geth Prime. And for the most part it works well. Except today, when Cole’s mic decided that no, it would only work ok when not in Steam. So we tried a 4-way Skype call, and that worked fine except that my AC sounded like, and I quote, “the howling winds of the North” to everyone else, and no way to fix it. Thus, what you’re looking at […]

Me: That sounds interesting, I should check it out. Oh hey, it’s kind of like The Final Countdown with evil velociraptors, asskicking giant bipedal lemurs, and dinosaurs? Hook me up with some of that. I should see if the library has it. Library: Yeah, checked out until April 5th. Me: APRIL 5TH! That’s like a week from now! I want it NOW. Yeah, so, Mass Effect 3 came out today. And, similar to what I did with the DLC post, let us compare and contrast what it took to get my most recent Steam purchase, Deus Ex: Human Revolution up and running versus how getting Mass Effect 3 up and running is going for me.

You end up needing to do something like this: If txtStrength.Text “” Then iStrength = Int(txtStrength.Text) Else iStrength = 0 End If Which, when you total it all up is several hundred lines of code, and takes for damned ever to write. One problem: iTunes only has the last few episodes, of thirty-some. You can get the archives from Wheaton himself, but alas, iTunes won’t recognize them properly and stick them in the podcasts section, even if you stick the files themselves there. Fortunately, there is a way around this, and here I am shamelessly […]

Dear GIMP people. I would enjoy using your program more if it included such basic features as line tools and basic shape drawing.  Please also note that if you have to resort to the level of elitist sarcasm shown in this tutorial (official, no less), you have failed.  On that same note, I would enjoy using your program more if your user interface didn’t suck the good suck, but let’s stick with things that are changable, here. 2. Let us take a brief moment and discuss module handling in Fantasy Grounds II, if for no other reason than the time is going to come when I’m going to want to remember the fix I just did. So, it’s possible to import data into an FG2 game using modules, which are basically archives with a big XML file and some random images and things. When FG fires itself up, it loads up all these individual XML files, categorizes them, and displays the parsed results. Which is good. Very useful for writing adventures and the like. However, there’s a problem. See, in a module XML file, each individual entity, let’s say an encounter, has a unique name, expressed as a […]

Because I was just talking to Samson about this and because I’d really rather not forget, let’s talk briefly about how I went about recoloring that cape. Basically I followed the tutorial here with some subtle differences. Basically, the sequence was this: First, I fired up GIMP and loaded up the pre-existing cape texture, which was one .dds file that covered both sides of the cape. I only wanted to recolor the outer part and not the gold border (which was part of the original image), so I cut that part out and pasted it as its own image and put the stock texture away for the moment. Then, in the bit I cut out, I went and did layer/color/desaturate, […]

There IS a unified theme here, and his name is Neal Stephenson, whose book Snow Crash is both the prompter of this post and the destroyer of a day or so of my time. In a good way. In a way that tells you to, honestly, stop reading now, and just go read the book, because it’s awesome. The fact that it discusses what it does in 1991 is, as my Dad points out, pretty amazing. Without going into too many plot details, because that would reveal too much, and would be, you know, telling, apparently the future is a dystopia, wherein corporations have replaced national governments, and […]

So, imagine you are sitting at your work computer, peacefully surfing Amazon like you’re getting paid to do. Or at least as peacefully as can be accomplished without the aid of a scroll wheel, which contrary to Samson’s beliefs really is the best computing invention ever. Suppose you see a screen like, say, this one. This is good, right? But then, every second or so, it flashes to this one. Yes, watching it do that all day was pretty much the high point of the day’s humor.

I’m really typing this so I don’t need to read my homework, so be warned I guess. [05:49] Dwip: *sigh* Mac people. [05:50] Dwip: Also Linux people. [05:50] Whir: Eh? [05:52] Dwip: Oh, reading people talking about Vista. The comment thread is overrun with people going “omg win0wz is teh sux0rz lol” [05:52] Whir: Pft. [05:52] Dwip: Mostly people going “Yeah, OS X is the shit.” [05:53] Dwip: You know, I’ve used OS X about twice. How people actually get anything done on Macs is beyond me. [05:53] Dwip: Then again I have the most bizzare desktop setup known to man. [05:54] Whir: You do, actually. [05:54] Whir: I can do stuff in OSX, it’s not too bad. [05:56] Dwip: […]

So I guess I sold out and got a cell phone. Which, in much the same way as Monroe getting a stop light after all these years, makes me somewhat less awesome and cooler than the hip in crowd than I once was. This is tragic. The shopping went pretty much like this: Mom and I: So, Cingular people. We have no idea what anything does, so how about explaining while trying to sell us a plan. Cingular: Sounds good. Basically, we’re really awesome. Also we know what we’re talking about. And if you should want to get started with us, our store’s over here. Us: Good deal. However, we must talk to Verizon first, just to be fair. Verizon: […]

Soundgarden for the win. So, Saturday, here. Spent Friday mostly freaking right the hell out about school, URI starting the 20th of this month, etc, calmed slightly by a few kind souls. So Saturday I’m settling down for some serious Getting Shit Ready To Go work, when Dad comes in with the mail. “You might want to check this,” he says, handing me an SCSU envelope. And I quote: “Dear Erik: I am pleased to notify you that the Admission committee has recommended your acceptance into the Master of Library Science degree program. All newly admitted students must immediately file a planned program in order to matriculate into the program.” Etc, etc. So I’m more or less into SCSU, which […]

I was talking, some small while ago, about how when I get Oblivion in a couple weeks, I would like it not to cause blue flames to shoot out my fan ports when my mostly four year old computer attempts to run it. Fortunately, as that saying goes, we can rebuild it. We have the technology, to the tune of a 3.2 Ghz CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and a 256 MB video card. I direct you, firstly, to a post from the days of yore, wherein this computer was originally built. With that firmly in mind, it’s amazing how much easier the whole thing is when you know what you’re doing. Though there were moments…Open up your computer some […]

Instead of my standard complaints about my ISP sucking the good suck, as it were, I shall instead reprise that great quote of yesteryear, which was true in that time, just as it is today: bash.org: i think in the whole sense of the “information superhighway”, my isp ended up driving a yugo down some dirt road Me: “Monroetel lives!” Clyos: “cept ours is a 80s Trans Am on cinder blocks, it doesn’t move” In other news, I have been somewhat remiss in my blogging lately, for which I have essentially no excuse. I fear you may never see the rumored bloggage of my adventures amongst the youth of today, but most anybody who cares has heard what there is […]

Let me advance to you the idea that, and let us put this politely, Linksys is fucking shit, Monrotel is fucking shit, and that I am living in the 21st fucking century, and that for me to have internet access that works largely intermittantly is, quite frankly completely and totally unacceptable. This was actually going to be, you know, a real post, but I’m pretty much out of patience at this point. It’s coming, I promise.

Hey, The Internet, why can’t I get MW2 and Windows XP to play together like good children? Thank you for proving to me that you are not, in fact, God. Because really, Google Groups Beta sucks the good suck. Really, really sucks the goodest suck there is available to suck. On the other hand, there is Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, which I recieved for my birthday, amongst a whole host of completely awesome gifts including more GGK books, a hardcover BMR, and a Tom Friedman book which promises to be interesting. But anyway. This game is […]

Topographic map of the area near my house. Aerial of my house (house/land in the lower left corner). Aerial of Oregon State University. Directly right of the “Campus Post Office” in yellow is the history building, Milam Hall, and across the quad from it is the MU. Second, as I will have left school and the country in a week, my ONID email will likely stop working, and I may or may not have access to my Alsherok account. With that in mind, I’ve set up a temp email at Hotmail for y’all to use should you want to contact me. Dwip142@hotmail.com. No, I had no idea Dwip was that popular a name either. Today’s been a good day. Took care of my passport, made my car like me again, and got that doctor’s appointment I need. Then I went home. And I’m there talking to my parents, and I’m like “Yeah, so why did I need to bring my checkbook, again?” Dad walks off, comes back with a laptop carrying case and some shopping bags. Santa had Arrived. And the people of the world rejoiced. I got, amongst other, lesser peripherals, a very nice laptop and a very nice digital camera, upon which the preceeding shot was taken. There is much goodness and joy in the world. Oh, and I swiped a box of cornflakes, too. Cornflakes rock.

Let’s play some multiplayer MC2.” “Don’t we need another computer for it?” “Well, yes.” “Where do we get one, then?” “How about all those spare parts you have?” “Well, we can try.” So we do. We end up using the corpse of my old Pentium 500 for it. P500, 128 MB of RAM, my old 16 meg vid card, and we hope onboard sound of some sort. And then we rip parts out of the old P233 – the old trayless 24x CD-ROM, the old 64 MB of RAM, the floppy. And we wrestle with old battleship steel cases a lot. This is ghetto […]

Holy crap am I tired. But more on that in a sec. Wednesday was MWDA night, of course. Liao Incursion xpack is now out, and we had a sealed booster to get in, which meant $30 and a random army because you could only use what you drew in the boosters you bought. So I get a pair of uniques out of my first two boosters. There’s, I dunno, 5 or 10 uniques per case, like 50 boxes a case if I remember all this right, and I got 2. Rock on. But it shortchanged my army, which meant I got stomped hard – 1 kill all night and it was a defenseless scout chopper. But I cleaned up on […]

Or, how to run a VCR. I decided this morning that yknow, I’d really like to watch Last of the Mohicans. Unfortunately, the only VCRs in the house are A, in my parents’ room, and B, downstairs. Now, I’m not fond of camping in my parents room to watch movies, so I went downstairs. The problem here, of course, is that the new VCR (year or two old) is pretty much shot. It has this little habit of eating tapes that kind of irks me… thus necessitating find another VCR. No problem, I figure. There are, after all, two older VCRs sitting around down there. So I hook up the first one, plug it in. WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Ruh-roh. Yank the plug […]

(there was an accidental misnumbering here) Or, the trials and tribulations of making Ye Olde Ancient P133 work again. Our tale begins about 6 months ago or so. With my good comp at college, I wanted something to play around on when I was at home. And my old computer was still running, so I decided hey, let’s use that. And Life Was Good. Then came the idea “Hey, let’s put Win98 on it!” Oops. The problems involved in this were legion, of course.
